Starting in the ’90s, painter, muralist and sculptor Salvador Gonzalez Escalona worked on reimagining downtown’s Hamel Alley, at the corner of Aramburu and Hospital, until he had transformed it into a vibrant mosaic monument to Cuba’s AfroCuban culture. His next, larger goal is to fan out from the alley and revitalize the surrounding Cayo Hueso neighborhood with artwork, changing people’s perception of it as a poor and violent place along the way.
