In 1754, a 22-year-old George Washington commanded his 160 men to build a fort in the middle of an open field in Western Pennsylvania. Shortly after its completion Fort Necessity would become the site of the very first battle in the French and Indian War. The war lasted nine years and would end France’s role as a colonial power in North America.
