Stunning scenery, local history and the excitement of a suspension bridge and tunnels are all on offer in the beautiful Karangahake Gorge (20 mins drive). The Windows Walk is a particularly favorite of ours which takes you on a very scenic walking tour of old gold mining tunnels (take a torch)…

“There is also a train ride from Waihi too Waikino. The Station is in Station Road. There is a cafe at Waikino or you can take a walk from there too an old mine and museum.”

Restaurant
“A little further afield, but well worth the effort of getting in the car, Falls Retreat is tucked away in the Karangahake Gorge just past Waihi township, and offers great food in an idyllic setting. The wood-fired pizzas are the highlight of the menu and if you’ve visiting in winter, ask for a table by the fire when you book (bookings are recommended for lunch and dinner). If you’re heading north after your stay, this is an ideal spot to stop for lunch on your way home.”
