The Quinta das Cruzes is a beautiful historic property located in the heart of Funchal, the capital of Madeira. This 18th-century quinta, or manor house, is a true gem of the island's architectural heritage. The Quinta das Cruzes is a perfect example of traditional Madeiran architecture, featuring a central courtyard surrounded by elegant arches and a lovely garden. The property has been carefully restored to its former glory, and it's now open to the public as a museum. Visitors can explore the quinta's many rooms and admire its beautiful furnishings, ceramics and artworks. One of the most striking features of the quinta is its impressive collection of tiles, which adorn the walls and floors of many of the rooms. These tiles, known as azulejos, are a traditional form of Portuguese art that has been a part of Madeiran culture for centuries. Visitors can admire the intricate patterns and colours of these tiles, which are a true testament to the island's artistic heritage. The quinta's garden is also a must-see, featuring a variety of tropical plants, flowers and trees. Visitors can stroll through the garden, admiring the lush greenery and the beautiful views of Funchal. The Quinta das Cruzes is not only a place to admire the architecture and art but also a place to learn about the history of Madeira. The museum provides visitors with an insight into the lives of the wealthy merchant families who once lived in the quinta and how they contributed to the development of the island. In summary, The Quinta das Cruzes is a must-see for anyone visiting Funchal. The property is a true gem of Madeiran architectural heritage and it offers visitors the chance to admire the island's traditional art and learn about its history. If you don’t go for the museum, go for the garden. A very nice and cosy retreat inside the city center. A well taken care garden to stroll around and you can also enjoy some nice views of Funchal.
