The oldest museum in Bulgaria, the museum of the archaeological institute has been in its present location the ‘Bujuk (Big) Mosque’ since 1899. Its collection includes treasures, coins and pre-historical monuments from Bulgarian soil through Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Well-displayed with Bulgarian and English captions. The highlights include the Valchitran gold treasure from the 14 century BC and the original floor mosaic from St. Sofia Church.

The National Archaeological Institute with Museum at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences covers the complete study of the culture of tribes and peoples who have occupied present day Bulgaria from the remote past until the 18th century. NAIM-BAS is a national center and coordinator of all field research in Bulgaria and exercises scholarly and methodological control on it. The Museum of Archaeology hosts the most numerous collections in Bulgaria and its exhibitions reveal it as one of the most important centers in the country for promotion of the cultural heritage of present day Bulgaria. The Buyuk (Grand) mosque (museum building) is the oldest building of its kind in Sofia. Its building inscription hasn’t survived, but according to some written records it was named Kodzha Mahmud Pasha dzhamisi, i.e., the mosque of the great Mahmud Pasha. A complex of many buildings surrounded the mosque as it was the Ottoman construction tradition.

Currently, the Archaeological Museum in Sofia preserves one of the richest archaeological collections on the Balkan Peninsula. The site is the 3rd oldest preserved century-old building in Sofia after its opposite rotunda "St. George" and the cathedral "St. Sophia", if we do not count the small medieval churches around the city. Twice archeological excavations reveal cultural layers from several epochs.
