The church of Gran Madre di Dio is a Neoclassic-style church located in front of Piazza Vittorio Veneto, at the western side of the bridge dedicted to Vittorio Emanuele I. The church was conceived in 1814 to celebrate the return of the King Victor Emmanuel I of Sardinia to the throne, after the defeat of Napoleon, and its architecture recalls the Pantheon in Rome. In 1969 the church was memorably featured in the film The Italian Job when Michael Caine and his gang drove their Mini Coopers down the front staircase.
