It may be a decade old but Matt McConnell's top-of-the-city bolthole hasn't been forgotten by Melbourne diners. Describing it as "tapas focussed" doesn't do justice to the delicacy and thoughtfulness of what appears on either the short regular menu, the expansive list of specials, or what's poured by the bar's excellent staff.

Tucked away at the top of Little Collins, Matt McConnell's Bar Lourinhã does a roaring trade in Iberian-inspired dishes to share. Squeeze into a spot at the bar and let your eyes decide on the diminutive morsels being handed out around you. When you're helped along by very good vino, the groans of the nearby parking garage are magically transformed into the rolling waves of the Mediterranean.

Consistently rated in the top 100 restaurants in Australia by Gourmet Traveller magazine this is co-owned by my good friend's older brother. Spanish tapas + dessert at its finest. Good wine list too.

One of my fave small restaurants, tapas bar, you can go on your own and eat at the bar. Such delicious food!
