Beyazıt Tower is one of the most important elements of the silhouette of the Historic Peninsula adorned with minarets. The historical building, also known as the Beyazıt Fire Tower, was built in 1749 as a wooden structure to monitor the fires, after the Küçük Pazar fire, which caused great loss in Istanbul. It is the first fire tower built to activate the firefighters in the city in case of possible fires. In some sources, it is stated that in the place of Beyazıt Tower, located in the Central Campus of Istanbul University, there was a tower called "Tetratsiyon" in the Byzantine period, which was built to watch the fires from afar. Fire alarms at Beyazıt Tower are lanterns at night; During the daytime, it was made with hanging baskets. The tower, where the fire news was given, surrendered to the flames several times. Beyazıt Tower, which was rebuilt every time as wooden, was built in 1828 by the II. It was built as masonry by order of Mahmut. In 1849, the wide eaves, cone-shaped wooden cover was replaced; Three floors with an octagonal plan, round windows and narrowing upwards are added. In 1889, a send pole was added to the tower. The 85-meter-high tower, built of cut stone, sits on a truncated pyramid-shaped pedestal. The tower is accessed from inside by a spiral-shaped wooden staircase. The tower has a total of 256 steps, 180 of which are on the viewing floor. The length of the flagpole is 13 meters. The tower, which has been used to monitor fires since the day it was built, is still used for fire warning and meteorological forecasting. If the tower is illuminated in blue at night, it indicates that the weather will be clear the next day, with green rain, yellow with fog and red with snow.
