Looking for a day out with a difference? Look no further – we are a 4 Star Visit Scotland Attraction. Only 8 miles from the M74, The Museum of Lead Mining in Wanlockhead sits amidst the Lowther Hills, directly on the Southern Upland Way. The Museum is a not-for-profit registered charity run by a Board of Trustees dedicated to preserving the rich mining and social heritage and history of the area. Discover our 18th century lead mine where you will experience the thrill of going on the only underground mine tour in Scotland. Take a glimpse into the past by visiting the miners’ cottages and see how the miners and their families lived during the periods of 1750, 1850 & 1910. The Miners’ Library is one of three subscription libraries in Scotland set up by the miners themselves. Due to it’s significance the library has been given Recognised Collection Status by the Scottish Government. A fantastic display of minerals, gold, mining and local artefacts are found in our Visitor Centre, along with our gift shop and tearoom. You can also purchase a license and go gold panning. Gold can be found in many areas of Scotland and particularly in the Lowther Hills around Wanlockhead and Leadhills where gold panning has been popular for centuries. Gold is found in the sands and gravels in the burns which act as a natural means of concentrating the gold. At various times prospectors were drawn to the Wanlockhead locality in search of gold. The first documented evidence of the recovery of gold in the area is from the reign of King James IV of Scotland in the early 16th century.
