C18th feminist Mary Wollstonecraft ('Vindication of the Rights of Women') is buried here. Author Thomas Hardy was a trainee architect before he turned to writing. He re-modelled this churchyard to make way for the new railways of the steam age. He stacked the old gravestones in 'Hardy's Circle'. My hero Edward Carpenter (friend of Walt Whitman) wrote here.

The grounds around the church are much more interesting, including the final resting places of Soane, Bach and William Franklin, the illegitimate son of Benjamin Franklin. A young Thomas Hardy even worked here during excavations for the new railway and left his name to a tree surrounded by the gravestones he helped move.
