Sightseeing

Enjoy spectacular coastal views along the Cape Byron walking track that takes you on a hike through rainforest, beach, grassland and clifftops to the lighthouse. En route you’ll wander through the shade of bangalow palms and ancient burrawangs, across kangaroo grasslands, along picturesque beaches and up to Cape Byron Lighthouse. Remember to keep an eye out on the water for turtles, dolphins, stingrays and, in season, whales. Stop at the Pass restaurant along the way for a fantastic brekky or lunch. There is also a coffee shop at the top beside the lighthouse, with snacks and coffee. This is one of my favorite walks, the views are just amazing! If you’d prefer an easier walk, the track can be accessed at numerous points and walked in shorter sections. The loop walk can be started at numerous points, including Captain Cook lookout, The Pass, Wategos Beach and Cape Byron Lighthouse. To get there follow Lawson Street (which becomes Lighthouse Road) from Byron Bay town centre and look for the signs. https://www.nationalparks.nsw.gov.au/things-to-do/walking-tracks/cape-byron-walking-track

If art is your scene, then the Tweed Regional Gallery and Art Centre is a well recognized local favorite place to visit. Check out the exhibitions and historical displays or head there if you enjoy a country drive, and then enjoy the views and lunch at the cafe. While you're there head over to Murwillumbah town which has become an eclectic, funky and artsy with great restaurants, shops, a cinema and plenty of op shops for those who love a good bargain. The Tweed Regional Gallery & Margaret Olley Art Centre is housed in a large, modern, architecturally award-winning building with views to Wollumbin/Mount Warning. The Gallery was relocated to this site in 2004 and extended in 2006. The Margaret Olley Art Centre opened as a purpose-built extension in 2014.

A great little spot to head to if you love a country drive and the tranquility of the rainforest. For the physically active and fit, stop for lunch at Mavis's Kitchen after a rigorous 3 hour return trip up and down Mount Warning (be prepared for sore calves afterwards!). Nestled at the base of the majestic Wollumbin-Mt Warning, this 25-acre former dairy farm is home to a relaxed country-style restaurant with a rich organic kitchen garden. Surrounded by World Heritage rainforest and the fertile farmland of the lush Tweed Valley, it’s no wonder the focus here is all about sustainability.

Great hiking spot

Minyon Falls lookout offers stunning views of the waterfall and rainforest. With easy parking, picnic spots and barbecue facilities, it's a great day trip location. For the active and fit, the 13km return trip hike through the rainforest to the falls is absolutely amazing - you can swim in the stream and rock pools at the bottom of the hike, or go a little further and climb over the rocks to get the to spectactular waterfalls and swimming hole on the other side. A moderate level of fitness and good walking shoes is recommended for this hike, and the trip should take about 3-4 hours.
