Greg’s Guide To Dullstroom

City/town information

Dullstroom is a small village well known for its fly fishing, mountain biking, hiking, birding and pristine mountain scenery as well as its quaint shops, restaurants and pubs. The village has a main road that runs through the centre of the town with pretty much all the businesses on either side of it. Set back from this main road is the residential area that extends back 5 to 6 blocks. There are numerous residential houses, many of which are holiday houses, retirement homes or guest houses. These areas of Dullstroom are quiet and you are barely aware that it may be a long weekend and that the town is filled to the brim. Many who visit say they can't believe how quiet the town is especially at night. There is no specific ideal time to visit Dullstroom. Winters are dry and cold which makes for excellent fly fishing, mountain biking, hiking and sitting around fires enjoying comfort food and good company. During summer the endless rolling fields of varying grasses are green, skies are blue in the morning and become congested with cumulonimbus clouds that roll in from below the escarpment, that by late afternoon have turned into thunder storms and rain showers. Roads are muddy and clouds can engulf the town for a few days at a time and again it becomes a great time to socialise around fireplace with friends, good food and beverages of your choice. Fly fishing is still good as the water remains cool, mountain biking is always good and the drives get a lot more adventurous. Spring and autumn are the less dramatic times of this sub-alpine grassland region situated at 2150m above sea level on the Steenkampsberg mountain range only 2 to 3 hours from Johannesburg and Pretoria and tend to be the quieter times of the year. You might say the calm before the storm when it comes to the number of people visiting the town. So if it quieter you are looking for then this is the time to visit. The weather tend to be dryer, days are hot and nights are cool. In spring all deciduous trees erupt in bright green new growth and in autumn the colours are amazing. Many of the businesses in town are owned by folk who have had enough of city life and decided to move here and set up business that range from your typical retail stores to an endless variety of restaurants, coffee shops, coffee roasteries, an award winning brewery, an incredibly well stocked whisky bar, a cheese shop, a few delicatessens, a couple of galleries, horse riding setups and a few fly fishing shops.. to mention a few. The general feeling and vibe of the town is relaxed, friendly and welcoming with the majority of the locals going the extra mile to make sure visitors are happy.

A restaurant you will not forget visiting, besides the great cuisine the decor is off the wall unusual. ladies you will love the shoes and feather boas. Steven and Brian are seasoned locals that have seen Dullstroom change from a very small village to a very busy, much bigger village. They literally know everyone and can help with just about anything you would like to know about the area.

A great spot for breakfast, lunches & dinners

Under new ownership this well positioned and great restaurant is well under way to climbing back up to its former position as one of the best places for breakfast and lunch but is also now open for dinners. The outside covered deck area is well positioned to provide a great view over the main road with the rolling grass covered mountains in the back ground. Their staff and friendly helpful, provide good service. Their menu is uncomplicated and growing. They are also known to have live music on Saturdays.

Situated in the Critchley Hackle lodge overlooking a dam that is surrounded by trees and lawn. They have an atrium that is fantastic in winter and very special on clear evenings. A well appointed bar is off the the one side of the dining area and a couple of fireplaces are well positioned for those chilly days or evenings. There is a good selection to choose from on their various menus. Their portions are good and the quality is great.

A great coffee & snack spot

Need I say any more! ..... Everyone knows what great coffees the franchise provides but this particular cafe has coffee as well as great light meals and stunning home made confectionary. Their mini carrot cakes or mini apple crumble tarts, biscuits and rusks are a must have.

One of the few great Cafes off the main road. The best part about its location is it faces east and overlooks memorial square and the old cricket pitch. The terrace has a stunning tree that provides shade in summer and an elevated view. The food .. well, words cannot describe the treat you are in for and they certainly know how to make great coffees. The owners are very friendly, helpful and run a modern, spotless Cafe. The Staff are fantastic.

Well situated at the eastern entrance to the village, close to the Crocodile River and right next to Anvil Ale under huge Pin Oaks and beautiful gardens. A wide selection of locally roasted coffees, locally backed cookies and on site prepared snack are available.

Best vehicle for your visit to Dullstroom.

We have a paved (tarred) road, the R540, leading to Dullstroom and through to Lydenburg that during summer can have nasty potholes that are made worse by the rainy season. An SUV or Pickup with larger tyres is ideal or be careful especially in the rain and at night. To really experience the area means being able to get off the beaten track. Get out up into the mountains and off onto the dirt roads. But for this you will need an SUV or Pickup, especially in summer where some roads will need the capabilities of a 4x4 and good clearance. The area surrounding Dullstroom is amazing.

Come prepared for all seasons.

Dullstroom is situated high on the Steenkamps Berg mountain range at 2150m above sea level. A local joke is “If you’re not happy with the weather, wait 20 minutes”. We can have all four seasons in a day. Bring a few layers and an outer waterproof jacket.

Walking around the village

Dullstroom is a small village and it’s very possible to walk from where you stay to pretty much anywhere in the village. It is safe to walk around at night but always a good thing, no matter where you are in the world, to not attract attention to yourself. Don’t go walking around dripping in fancy jewelry, watches or lavish handbags.
