My favorite coffees and pastries spots in Milano

Italians often start their morning with a coffee or cappuccino and pastry on the way to work. A morning cappuccino taken in a hurry standing at the bar counter or a quick shot of mid-afternoon espresso are commonplace. But there’s a growing trend among Milanesi to acquire and enjoy their coffee differently, as a moment of relaxing, disconnecting from the busy day or catching up with a friend.

I love the sweet and savory brioches (they are soft and delicious), the puff pastry croissants and the famous "maritozzi" (Roman sweet buns with whipped cream that are now also in fashion in Milan). The Clivati pastry shop is also famous for its Tiramisu, which is a must try!

It was founded in 1936 as a “concert café” by Luigi Cucchi and his wife Vittorina. Since 2002, it is one of the "Historical Places of Italy" and since 2015 one of the "Historical Shops of Milan". A must-visit! Breakfast is a magnificent moment here: I particularly love the cappuccino and the Venetian almonds smelling.

Founded in 1817 by Antonio Cova, it is one of Italy’s oldest pasticceria. You have to taste the impeccable espresso and the "melange" chocolate served in very nice cups.

Born in 1911, it is an important piece of Milano history. Mythic candied marrons, the best in Milan (probably in Italy?), hand made with excellent quality raw materials and with techniques and secrets handed down by the founder Giovanni Galli and kept by family members for four generations. It is my family's tradition to buy, each autumn, at least one of the iconic Galli white boxes filled with candied chestnuts and violets. They are delightful!

Close to the apartment, this ice cream shop is attentive to the highest quality raw materials. The ice cream is 100% natural. In my opinion, the Avola almond and Domori 100% dark chocolate are absolutely worth trying. Also try the granitas, in particular the Avola almond one! Discovering Milano

Duomo is the symbol of Milano. It is the largest church in Italy and one of the largest Catholic cathedrals in the world. Its construction began in 1386 and ended in 1965 by the famous institution "Fabbrica del Duomo". Galeazzo Visonti granted to the Fabbria del Duomo the exclusive use of the pink-hued white marble of the quarry of Candoglia and exonerated the payment of taxes. On the outside, the cathedral resembles an intricate marble forest, due to the thousands of carved spiers and statues. At the top of the main spire rests the glistening golden statue of the Madonnina, an evocative symbol much-loved by Milanesi. It is not generally known that there are quite a few copies of Milano’s Madonnina around the world, including one on Mount Everest. The beautiful, colorful stained-glass windows depicting scenes from the Bible, reflect a suggestive light Inside the church. It is possible to visit the Cathedral Treasure and walk on the rooftop from which it is also possible to admire a spectacular panorama of city the mountains in the distance. “Every evening I went out, around one in the morning, to take another look at the Milan Duomo. This church, lit by a beautiful moon, offers a vision of ravishing beauty to the world. Never before has architecture awakened such sensations in me” Stendhal, November 5th, 1816

The origin of Castello Sforzesco, one of the largest in Europe, date back to 1358 – 1368. Its large courtyards, massive walls, moat, towers, crenulated battlements are really fascinating. The view towards the city centre and over Parco Sempione is well worth the tour alone. Castello Sforzeso has played many roles: one of the main military citadels in seventeenth-century Europe, ducal residence and military barracks. According to legend, Ludovico il Moro built a secret tunnel from the Castello until the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie to be used as an escape route in case of siege and to secretly visit the tomb of his wife Beatrice d’Este. Leonardo was at home here and Castello Sforzeso conserva Michelangelo's final masterpiece, the Pietà Rondanini. At present it hosts several dedicated Municipal Museums and, since 1896, it has been home to one of the city’s most extensive art collections which boasts masterpieces by Andrea Mantegna, Giovanni Bellini, Lorenzo Lotto, Correggio, Tintoretto and Canaletto. The Collection of Musical Instruments is among the largest in Europe.

It was built starting from 1088 on the foundations of an early Christian church dated around 380, when Mediolanum was the capital of the Western Roman Empire. It is magnificent, a must see. Leonardo's Last Supper is depicted on the wall of the refectory of the Dominican Convent of Santa Maria delle Grazie, one of the most beautiful churches in Milan. This complex dates back to 1459 and in1980was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List because it is considered of the greatest testimonies of Italian Renaissance. My advice? Take a moment to sit on one of the benches in the magical Cloister of the Frogs, which dates back to the late 1400s.

Where to eat like an authentic Milanese: not-to-be-missed addresses and new openings

Milano is the main economic hub of Italy, the capital of fashion and design, but it is also one of the best italian cities for dining. Finding a good place to eat in Milano is not a difficult task to take on. Today, Milano boasts 15 Michelin-starred restaurants including one that has a maximum of three. Moreover, there is always some new opening, up-and-coming chefs, many different trendy addresses. Going out in the evening is a true part of the city’s lifestyle and it is always an exciting experience. Below, I spotlight some of the best restaurants and pizzeria in Milano in my opinion, in no particular order.
One of the restaurants loved by me and my family. Aurora is a nice Liberty-style Trattoria. In the summer, the romantic courtyard is beautiful. It is famous for its traditional cuisine of Piemonte: agnolotti, bagna caoda, fritto misto, risotto with courgette flowers. Its classic and winter boiled meat cart is renowed and I absolutely recommend trying it: it is very rich and includes cappello del prete, muscolo, testina, lingua, cotechino, gallina, biancostato, coda, noce….. It is served with several different sauces: green and red sauce, mustard, cucumbers, pickled vegetables, peppers. Absolutely to try the great Piemontese fried: by reservation only, minimum for 4 people. In season, white truffle: with tajarin, agnolotti or fried eggs (very typical). When I can, I don't give up on Piemontese raw meat. Fantastic!

It was founded in 1972. The rooms are beautiful, of austere elegance, with original furnishings from the early twentieth century. But even more beautiful is the garden. The cuisine is typical of Lombardia (risotto, pasta e fagioli tiepida, cotoletta alla milanese…) to which some more creative selection is added (focaccia con stracchino, insalata di gamberi e cannellini salad, paccheri ai crostacei). The wine list is extensive and excellent. The service is very friendly and professional. It is very close to the apartment. It is absolutely necessary to book in advance.

Very close to the apartment, this place is a Michelin selection: it is marked with 1 red knife-and-fork. The place retains quite warm atmosphere. It is one of the most evocative locations in the city. It stands on the outskirts, a bit far from the apartment, on the ruins of a 15th century farmhouse (hence the name of the restaurant) used as a guesthouse for the old convent of Castellazzo. You can find here a modern interpretation of the traditional Milanese and Lombard culinary heritage cuisine. The place is beautiful, in front of the famous Bosco Verticale : the building was before an old cinema and then a tramway. The outdoor area on the public park is a plus. At noon, easy lunches and, in spring and summer, take-away picnics on weekends, which allow you to enjoy this green corner of the city. The choice is between a few dishes (four or five appetizers, as many first, second and desserts). Risotto is always present. The cotoletta is one of the best in Milan in my opinion. It must be booked 48 hours in advance. The Ratanà cotoletta is a finger and a half high, rigorously made from Piedmontese sanato vea. Sanato veal feeds only on mother's milk and not on water and powdered milk. All the ingredients of the cutlet are excellent: the butter is from the Domodossola dairy, clarified; the breading is made with a bread made with mother yeast. It costs 30 euros, but they are 4 ounces of excellent meat, without bone.

Excellent pizza with "Olio a crudo", that is, the oil is put on the pizza after cooking, as soon as it comes out of the oven. This is not normally done, but it gives the pizza a particular taste. All the ingredients (flour, tomato, mozzarella) are selected with great care. The menu also includes some appetizers (excellent in my opinion the Eggplant Parmigiana) and first courses (very good the Polipetti alla Luciana). The desserts are not homemade, but are from a famous Neapolitan pastry chef, Sal De Riso: to try the classic Delizia al Limone, the Trilogy al Caffè, the Babà.

It is one of the oldest restaurants in Milan and a must to understand what it means to eat in Milano. The atmosphere is nice: wooden tables and sideboards, white tablecloths, cream tiles, and brick walls invite warmth into every room. La Pesa offers traditional Milanese dishes, such as L'Oss Bus (veal ossobuco and yellow risotto); La Busecca (Milanese tripe with white beans); Il Salto (the classic yellow risotto stir-fried, a real treat). But above all there is the Cotoletta alla Milanese , served with roasted potatoes flavored with rosemary. Heaven !!

A bit far from the apartment (near Gratosoglio), but, in my opinion, the magical location and exquisite cuisine are worth the move . The menu varies according to the seasons, but the flavors are always those of typical Milanese cuisine: yellow risotto, ossobuco, rognone, rostisciada, casseuola and the legendary cotoletta! , At Garghet the cotoletta is a must: both the "elephant ear" (of loin and well beaten), and the more classic Milanese (rigorously made of veal, high and cooked in butter) are offered. A small room with about thirty seats, an historic venue that takes you back to a Milan of years ago (the sign has been the same since 1967). A tiny, family run trattoria environment. Menu changes daily, depending on the market offers and dishes are typical of the exquisite Italian home cooking, very simple, and so difficult. Spaghetti with lemon and chilli pepper are famous: Sam Kass, chef of President Obama, who visit La Latteria during Expo 2015, has included this dish on the White House menu.

A small room with about thirty seats, an historic venue that takes you back to a Milan of years ago (the sign has been the same since 1967). A tiny, family run trattoria environment. My reference place for pizza. Great pizza, made with excellent ingredients and perfect cooking. It is the authentic pizza Napoletana with a high cornice, mozzarella, Sammarzano tomatoes and extra virgin olive oil. The service is allways nice and attentive. It is very close to the apartment.

Le Guide ai Quartieri

Navigli area is a very popular place of the city. It is a no traffic zone so it’s nice to walk and to find beautiful corners, as for example Vicolo Lavandai, where women used to wash their clothes. The Navigli were a system of 90 km of canals whose construction lasted to XII century that connected the lake Maggiore, the lake Como, the Ticino river and the Po river and also connecting Milan with Switzerland, North Eastern and Western Europe and to the sea and irrigate and productive huge areas. These waterways had been built with a system of dams invented by Leonardo Da Vinci in the XV century. It is possible to see Leonardo’s Dam along Naviglio Pavese. The Duomo di Milano has been build with the marple coming via these canals. However, in the second half of the XIX century, many section of these canals has been covered and today only two main waterways remain: Naviglio Grande and Naviglio Pavese. The area between them and their point of convergence, the Darsena, is called Naviglio District This zone of Milano has a unique bohemian atmosphere, very different from the rest of the city. At sunset and at night, the area is plenty of life and young people thanks to all its bars, restaurants, ethnic markets, trendy shops. A good idea is go there for an aperitif. A “not-to-be-missed” date for antiques collectors the world over is the “Mercatone dell’Antiquariato” , the largest outdoor flea market in Milan. It stretches for 2 kilometers and is held during the last Sunday of every month.
