Sightseeing

National Trust property with gardens and village
Fabulous medieval village with quaint streets, gardens and walks. You don't have to go into the castle to enjoy the visit so you can avoid an entry fee but they do have fabulous gardens and hold regular fun events. Plenty of things to see and eat and entry to big walking country.

A 10 minute drive from my space or alternatively go by steam train from Williton Station and it’s a couple of stops and a short walk from the train. This is a beautiful Abbey ruin, you can walk in the grounds for free but have to pay to go in to see more. There is not much roof so it is a basic ruin but there are still some magnificent structures to see and the setting is glorious. It is an English Heritage site so if you are a member you will get in free. There are some events held here in the summer so watch out for those. After visiting here you could pop to Torre Cider Farm down the road for a coffee and food and cider souvenirs!

15-20 minutes drive along the fantastic coastline and the Quantock Hills known as Coleridge Company. Coleridge lived in this area for several years and wrote his most famous poems whilst here. His old house is a small place to visit but it is set amongst a small but bustling village with a butchers and several pubs and shop. Very quaint village and once you have seen Coleridge Cottage you could commence the walk along ‘Coleridge Way’ across the Quantocks or go the other side of the road and pick up the West Somerset Coast Path.

This has changed hands several times in the last 10 years. It was a farm when i arrived and sometimes the cows would tumble down the cliff to arrive safely on the beach until they were brought back to their field!! Now in local hands again it is a small animal visitors farm with free of charge entry. There is a large ‘ham and chips’ cafe and roast dinner on a Sunday. Have a coffee and just enjoy the views over the Jurassic coastline to South Wales and beyond to the Severn Bridge on a good clear day. Visiting the animals is free and they sometimes have a car boot sale. The best bit is the car park as the local public one has now been closed due to the cliff erosion. Park here, have a cup of coffee and then spend a glorious half hour to a few hours walking along Helwell Beach finding fossils in amongst the shale or the super large ones sited in the cliff. For guiding to where they are I’ll give you some tips. Five minutes away in the car or 20-30 minutes walk.

Nice place to visit for food, in a great little village from which you could walk up onto the Quantocks. 10 minute drive, main meals are about 15 pounds, some a bit cheaper

Walking

My favourite walks from half an hour stompers to all day rambles
The lesser known Quantock Hills but the first AONB in the country. Small enough to get to know relatively well but large enough to discover new walks all the time. You can walk through gladed wooded areas, along small streams or across purple moorlands taking in views of the coastline at the same time. From Bicknoller Post you can have a 360 degree view taking in South Wales and the Mumbles, a birds eye view of the HPC construction (quite fascinating), Berrow Mump, St Michaels Mount and on a good day take in Glastonbury. Then continue round to see across Exmoor and Dunkers Beacon to North Hill in Minehead. I have maps and walking trip books available in my space for you to borrow and plan your walks or tell me how long you want to spend on the hills. You can incorporate many different pubs and tea houses. You can also join the MacMillan Way or Coleridge Way or walk along the top ridge to nearly reach Taunton or Bridgwater in the other direction.
