Cavvanbah —— The Meeting Place Byron Bay's original inhabitants are the Arakwal people, who are part of the Bundjalung group. The Arakwal called this area 'Cavvanbah', which means the meeting place, was the name of the settlement until 1894 when it became Byron Bay. Located on the far-north coast of NSW, home to Australia's most easterly point and the iconic Cape Byron lighthouse, the region is known for its unique, green & organic vibe, spectacular beaches, top notch shopping / dining experiences, world-class cultural / music festivals and vibrant community spirit. Beyond the township of Byron Bay, the region includes many seaside villages, quaint hinterland towns, and large regional centres, all with their own unique character.

Suffolk Park has grown to a point of having its own identity and micro-culture. Situated just south of Cape Byron, only ten-minute drive from Byron Bay and has the world famous white sand Tallow Beach, which stretches 15km from Cosy Corner at the Cape south to Broken Head. Staying around Suffolk Park you will be delighted with not only the beach but the walks through to Taylors Lake, alive with water-birds. Being flat, this area is ideal for family cycling. There is a network of paths through Suffolk Park itself and then past the high school into Byron, about 25 minutes away. Or walk along the beach to Cosy Corner under the Cape, and through the national park to Lighthouse Road and Byron Bay proper.

The Broken Head nature reserve stretches over the headland and offers spectacular views along the coast in both directions. Unlike the kilometres of beach found elsewhere, Broken Head is broken up into small bays, which can only be reached on foot. Walk over the headland, or park your car on the bush road and walk through the bush to your favourite cove. Whether it repels or attracts you, be aware that these beaches are known for nude and gay bathing.

Lennox Head is situated at the northern end of Ballina Shire, on the way to Byron Bay. Over recent years it has developed from a quiet coastal village into a sophisticated town offering a wide array of accommodation types, restaurants, cafés and shops. The beach runs parallel to the main street, with direct access at several points, and that classic Aussie icon, the surf club, stands sentinel on the beach at the northern end of town. Lennox is famous for its right hand point break, and hosts several surfing competitions through the year, including the All Girl Surf Showdown in June, the Gromfest (juniors) in July and the biennial Lennox Masters Surf Classic. Lake Ainsworth is a natural tea-tree lake with tea-coloured water which is reputed to have therapeutic qualities, it nevertheless offers a picturesque picnic and recreation area. Generations of Aussie kids have been taught to swim and sail here and Lennox still retains something of that beachy, fibro, sun-bleached image. Lennox is at the southern end of Seven Mile Beach, a beautiful curve running up to Broken Head in the north. Just south of the town on Lennox Head itself is the Pat Morton lookout, from where hang-gliders take off and fly over the town and the beach. There is excellent snorkelling in the 'moat' at the southern end of the beach.
