The University of North Carolina Department of Emergency has 40 clinical and research faculty, as well as additional adjunct faculty, involved in the teaching, administration, research, and clinical care missions of the department. The department sees volumes of approximately 70,000 adults and 15,000 pediatric patients yearly. As one of the largest referral centers in North Carolina, UNC systems sees some of the highest acuity patients in the state, with an admit rate near 30%, and it is a certified Level I Trauma Center, state Burn Center, and JCHAO Stroke Center.
