There are so many options for trying bourbon along Kentucky's storied trail that you could really spend a few days doing it. But even a day trip can give you a good sampling, no pun intended, of what the trail has to offer. For two interesting but distinct experiences, try Buffalo Trace Distillery (113 Great Buffalo Trace, Frankfort) and Woodford Reserve Distillery (7855 McCracken Pike, Versailles). At the former, in a more industrial setting, book the "Hard Hat Tour" for a behind-the-scenes look. Then make the 20-odd minute drive to scenic Woodford Reserve, admiring the horse farms along the way. Before or after your tour, grab lunch in the on-site cafe. Its menu was designed by chef Ouita Michel, who has several other restaurants in the area. Tip: Be sure to schedule your tour ahead of time if you have your heart set on visiting a specific distillery, as they do sometimes book up.
