Dedicated in 1763, the building was designated a National Historic Site in 1946. The building was spared from being torn down and used as firewood during the British occupation of Newport, because it was used as a hospital for Brittish troops. Currently, it’s the oldest surviving synagogue in the US, and still operates as an active place of worship. In 1790, George Washington defended religious freedom in a letter "To the Hebrew Congregation in Newport," stating that the new nation would give "to bigotry no sanction, to persecution no assistance." Tours include a half hour seated presentation in Touro Synagogue and two floors of exhibits in the Loeb Visitors Center at 52 Spring St.
