Unlike many of the piers on Durban’s beaches, the whale-bone pier rests on only six widely-spaced columns. This gives beachgoers plenty of room to pass or play beneath. Beams atop the columns and rib elements wrap around under the trough, extending up to the deck, to stiffen the construction. At the deck ends of these, Duvenage anchored 16 pairs of masts.

Situated in the beautiful Umhlanga Rocks on the KZN East coast. Stretching in to the Indian Ocean. Safe and secure parking in close proximity. Walking distance from the Umhlanga CBD and all the hotels on the beautiful Umhlanga prominade. Absolutely beautiful in the mornings with sunrise. Great opportunity for photos. The pier is particularly attractive at night as it is beautifully lit. It is pleasant to be able to walk out over the waves, especially in the evening. The mosaics set into the pavement are particularly pretty. This pier is such a draw card because it is so unusual. Guests will feel safe.

Umhlanga, KwaZulu Natal Refreshing to watch the ocean. A beautiful sight to see especially for a walk at sunrise. Amazing place to take pictures and go get in the lighthouse as well. Safe and beautiful with the best views of Durban, the shores, beautiful buildings and the ocean. Take a walk from there to small coffee shops and to the Pearls Shopping Centre.
