A 22 mile, spectacular drive to the trailhead...no traffic....ever....The drive takes you down the historic TarryAll Valley and over the TarryAll Mountains. Matukat road takes you through some of the 2002, Hayman Fire burn area and some of the most mineral-rich areas in the world.... a prospector’s dream! Lost Creek Wilderness was officially designated by the Colorado Wilderness Act of 1980 with additions in 1993. Today it totals 119,790 acres. Elevations range from 8,000' to 12,400' above sea level. Lost Creek was named after a creek of the same name that repeatedly disappears undergound only to reappear again further downstream where it ultimately becomes Goose Creek. Lost Creek is accessed by a 136 mile trail network, 105 miles of which are within the Wilderness boundary. The trail system traverses tree-lined mountain parks, fascinating rounded granite domes, and rare granite arches. Black bears, bighorn sheep, deer, elk, and bobcats share the region. Vegetation includes ponderosa, bristlecone, and lodgepole pine, aspen, spruce, fir, and alpine tundra.

Designated as a Wilderness Area by the United States Congress in 1980, the Lost Creek Wilderness now contains over 110,000 acres of land, all of which is located in Colorado. The Lost Creek Wilderness can be found within the Pike National Forest. The name of the wilderness area was taken from Lost Creek, which was designated as a National National Landmark in 1966 and is called the Lost Creek Scenic Area. The natural landmark itself got its name from the fact that Lost Creek has a tendency to disappear underground and reappear downstream.

The easiest access to these trails from our cabin is the Brookside-McCurdy Trailhead just outside Bailey. The trail system is vast from this point so you can do as long or short of a hike as you like. We recommend turning towards brookside trial at the first trail split for a scenic hike that alternates between a mossy pine forest trail that follows a brook and an aspen covered hilltop hike with views of the surrounding mountains and rock formations. On weekdays you may just have this trail to yourself, rare for the front range! We highly recommend this trailhead to trail runners. Good views and not too steep in either direction but still enough elevation gain for a scenic and varied run!
