The whole experience is wonderful & worth the cost. Very informative on some really intriguing history of the island, the military, native americans & the prison, gorgeous views of the city, a nice boat ride, pleasent walk , good photo opportunities. Several options on tours are available that focus on different aspects . Can also get a really good deal with a CityPass, but look for info on that in the CityPass entry.

Haven't actually done this but heard that the Alcatraz audio tour is excellent.

Take the audio tour- but get your reservation in advance because they are often sold out! Consider bringing a jacket as it is windy and sometimes cold on the island.

Many of our guests love touring the famed Alcatraz where many famous criminals were once held (e.g., Al Capone, Frank Morris, George Kelly, etc).

You can't leave SF without checking out Alcatraz and find out why there was no way to "Escape Alcatraz". Be sure and take a sweater or jacket.
