The 17 Acre Nature Preserve is only a few blocks from the house and is a great place to walk to for a little dose of nature.
There is a greenway along the Ellerbe Creek with the Preserve on both sides of the creek. You can get off the greenway and step onto very short trails. Look for plant identification signs. It's a nice getaway info nature.
