Buoy Beer is a tourist magnet for good reason. Built out over the wharf, there's a glass floor where you can wave to the sea lions (which you can hear from our house). The roll up windows are fantastic to feel the river breeze during the summer months. The menu is great, especially the burgers, mac n' cheese, and shrimp salad. Plus, the beer is really outstanding, close enough to walk back uphill to our place. :-)

There are lots of great restaurants in Astoria now, thanks in large part to Baked Alaska's chef, Chris Holen. He and his wife, Jen were traveling from the SW back to Alaska with a food cart serving soup when they happened through Astoria. There was a tiny restaurant in town, and on a whim, they bought it. Without just a few months they had lines out the door, and within a year, they moved into the current location. They've been expanding ever since, and now have a fine dining, a pizzeria, bar and annex for events/parties. Chef Holen is also in a pilot documentary, Chef Outta Water, which documents his chef experiences in Iceland and Australia.

Fort George is literally what put Astoria on the map, way back in 1811 (make sure to check out the historical monument and garden behind the pub). The Fort now covers a full half block, with two restaurants, a tap room, a garden, and the brewery itself. The upstairs specializes in wood fired pizza and the downstairs is a northwest-inspired pub. Feel free to ask for free tasters before you decide which beer you want, or just order a sample tray. There's often live music after 8. The Fort George Brewery & Public House just celebrated ten years, and is a destination for beer lovers, both locals and tourists. :-)

Our family loves Frite and Scoop. They always have different ice cream flavors, but nothing too outrageous. The latest favorite is made from mint Girl Scout cookies, delish! The fries are really worth the splurge, especially with the rosemary salt and north coast sauce. The location on the river walk can't be beat, enjoy the best of Astoria! Peace, Darcy

Blue Scorcher is a cooperative run by the sweetest people with a down-to-Earth vibe. All the pastries and breads are amazing. They make homemade chocolate that are delectable, and the rest of their limited menu is super healthy and delicious. They have great drip coffee. There's a fun corner for kids to play and a couch section for folks who want to B.S. It's a favorite places of tourists and locals alike. :-)

Street 14 has a great "Astoria" vibe. It opens into the Commodore Hotel, which is the first place I ever stayed in town (nicely renovated w/ small rooms & bath down the hall). Street 14 is owned by a sweet couple who moved from Germany after getting their PhDs, now they are devoted to the "farm to table" model. They bought the coffee shop and quickly turned it into a bakery. Now they offer lunch and dinner a few nights a week. During the summer I would recommend getting a reservation for dinner. :-)
