I would recommend taking a guided tour which includes the drive up the Milford Road, rather than trying to make the long drive yourself. I would recommend "Trips and Tramps" as they are small group specialists.

Doubtful Sound is much larger than Milford and a true wilderness experience. Real Journeys offer daytime cruises, I would recommend taking the first cruise of the day because you tend to get the best wildlife viewing conditions.
