This cozy little restaurant on a small street off the big canal, the Naviglio, offers creative dishes with 'Masterchef' style flair in an industrial chic ambience. Non-pretentious service and a great price point for the degustation menus make this a local favourite for special occasions in couples or small groups. 28 seats means booking is a must!

Al Cortile, the restaurant founded by the Food Genius Academy culinary school, serves up reinterpretations of classic Italian dishes created by the best students of the Academy. Foodies will enjoy watching the workings of the open kitchen, which is the actual kitchen for the school. Also fantastic for aperitivo.

One of the oldest bakeries in the city. Hip new hangouts are great, but when you are able to hear about the newest between the local gents and the ageing but sharp baristas - which tend to revolve around holidays or the best ham they bought on the weekend - whilst enjoying some of the best breakfast croissants and cappucinos in the city, there's no debate on where I'd rather be. Home to the best pastries in the city. Aperitivo hour is like a trip back in time!

Milanese cuisine is not known outside of Italy as well as say, Neapolitan or Sicilian cuisine, but there's nothing like a well-prepared risotto Milanese with osso buco to warm a belly in the evening. A fancy yellow risotto due to the saffron, and full of umami from the braised veal shanks placed on top, this delicacy is the perfect introduction to Milanese cuisine, and the Osteria del Binari does it well. Not to mention the beautiful inner courtyard and interior that makes you feel like stepping back into the elegance and glamour of 1950's Milan.

You are in Milan, a melting pot of international and regional gastronomical flavours, but you just need a goddang burger... it happens. But please at least have a good one - at Baobab, local and regional ingredients are used to create burgers that are distinctly Italian - imagine burrata from Puglia and mozzarella put together with the best beef and maybe some sort of homemade pesto. Of course, if you insist, they do have the cheddar-tomato-beef burgers, so don't panic. You won't be disappointed.

This distinctly romantic and adorable space is run by a set of twin sisters who are passionate about people as much as they are passionate about food. A creative Italian menu changes daily, the vibe is young and warm, the ingredients are fresh, the table setting is romantic. With a story that dates back to the 18th century, this historical converted farmhouse with its vegetable garden makes you forget that you are in the centre of the concrete city. The restaurant serves a fresh menu with organic ingredients at its centre, whilst the more casual bistrot part has delicious pastries and healthy pre-prepared dishes for eating on-the-go. There is an internal florist, once a week organic farmers' market, and also a small hostel in the compound. Highly recommended.

Everything Else

Stuck on what to do? Or weary after a long trip? QC Terme is a spa in the centre of Milan where the locals love to go to recuperate. I recommend booking ahead online and going for the weeknight 'Aperiterme' option - around 40 euros gets you evening access to all parts of the spa, including the aperitivo buffet. Have a sneaky glass of prosecco, enjoy a few healthy snacks, and head downstairs to experience the numerous sauna rooms, water massage, or head outside to the outdoor hot spas under the stars, surrounded by old Roman walls. The bathroom facilities are full of their own products to use, and towel, slippers, gown are all provided, so you just need to bring your swimmers. GOLD.

Arts & Culture

If you're a contemporary art buff, this is the place to go to. Prada has always been a big patron of the arts, and the new museum (built 2015) housed in an old converted brewery, is home to a very well curated selection of exhibits. Check the website to read up before, as sometimes the exhibits tend to be quite abstract. The internal cafe, Bar Luce, designed by Wes Anderson, is a must (in my case, the highlight!). Make sure your phone is charged for this instagramamble beauty.
