Pappy's is the most popular music venue in the area. It's also a killer BBQ restaurant and bar, in an actual western movie set turned tiny town. Check their calendar before your trip for show listings. REALLY good food. Vegetarian options too! But I almost always get the pork chop!

Very popular live music venue, bar and restaurant. It's location, right on the corner at the JT crossroads (Highway 62 and Park Ave), makes it sort of the apex of town. Big patio for warm weather dining and full indoor bar, pool tables and dining areas. There always seems to be something lively going on here. Expect long wait times during holiday periods. Check local listings and their website for featured entertainment.

Just coffee. Incredible, strong, organinc, fresh-roasted, fresh-brewed coffee. Located behind Instant Karma yoga studio, with a patio for enjoying the sunshine (or umbrella shade) while getting a jolt. Pick up some ground coffee to make at the house or a bag of beans to take home. We ALWAYS do!

A cute little Spanish style inn near the North Entrance to Joshua Tree National Park. The restaurant is next to the pool and nice for outdoor dining when the weather permits. Good steaks, seafood, pasta and fresh organic veggies grown on the premises. Lunch, dinner and Sunday brunch. Wine, beer and cocktails.

Our favorite mercado to stock up on Mexican groceries, dry goods, produce, meat, snacks, beverages, etc. Cook your own feast, or grab trays of taco fixin's in the back to bring home and feed your crew. A full taqueria in the back of the market serves up the best taco's, enchiladas, tostadas, burritos, tortas, quesadillas, menudo, etc in the high desert. Fast, cheap and so delicious!

Non-descript little place in the strip mall behind Wells Fargo bank. We stumbled upon it when the wait at Sam's was too long, and were thrilled to find great Vietnamese food and friendly service! I have food restrictions and was pleased that the cook/proprietress was happy to come out of the kitchen to answer questions about her menu. Plenty of gluten-free, vegan and vegetarian options. Fresh and flavorful!

Yep, good Thai food in the desert. The server might make fun of you if you order a level 5 on the spicy scale... definitely "at your own risk". She told me "People don't actually believe us that it's VERY spicy, it's the highest level so OF COURSE it is! Don't order 5 if you can't handle it". I like her attitude and the food was great (mine = level 2).

Parks & Nature

Probably the reason you’re here. Definitely a must-see, regardless. The West Entrance is 16 miles from the house. Named for our region’s twisted, bristled Joshua trees, the park straddles the cactus-dotted Colorado Desert and the Mojave Desert. Keys View looks out over the Coachella Valley. Hiking trails weave through the boulders of Hidden Valley. Incredible camping in several campgrounds, stargazing for days! A climber and boulderer’s paradise. A photographer’s dreamland. Entrance fee is $25 per vehicle for a 7-day pass, $12 for a motorcycle or bicycle. First make a stop at the Visitor’s Center for maps, and other info. Open 8:am–5:pm. 6554 Park Boulevard, Joshua Tree, CA

The Big Morongo Canyon Preserve is a 31,000 acres (130 km2) native plants habitat and wildlife preserve located in the Little San Bernardino Mountains of the Transverse Ranges, in the transition zone between the higher Mojave Desert and lower elevation Colorado Desert section of the Sonoran Desert. Due to its location within this transition zone, the area is especially high in natural diversity. The natural spring fed desert oasis found here is one of the 10 largest Cottonwood and Willow habitats in California. It is also identified by the Audubon Society as one of the most important avian habitat areas in California.

Sightseeing

Though it requires an advanced reservation (sometimes booking months out) for a “Sound Bath” (a spiritual and meditative experience inside the structure), even if you aren’t able to secure that, this is still a very cool place to check out. Anyone interested in aliens or UFO-ology must visit! Built in 1954 over several months a circular, dome-topped building, 38’ tall and 55’ in diameter, constructed by George Van Tassel over the course of nearly two decades in perfect accordance with the instructions of an extraterrestrial visitor! Yes, you read that right!

A beautiful, and VERY steep tram ride up the wall of Chino Canyon, with breathtaking views of Palm Springs and the valley floor below. Since it’s completion in 1963, nearly 18 million people have traveled the 10-minute, 2.5 mile ride, which begins at the Valley Station (elevation 2,643 feet) and ends at the Mountain Station (elevation 8,516 feet). There are over 50 miles of hiking trails at the top, as well as two restaurants, 2 documentary movie theaters, a gift shop and a natural history museum.

This charming, eclectic shop in a repurposed gas station is a must-stop in Joshua Tree. Lots of cool gifts, locally made coffee, candles, chocolate, t-shirts, cactus, jewelry, pottery and olive oil, along with an amazing selection of groovy vintage treasures, magazines, records and home decor. Also an event space available to rent, with a gorgeous back patio and bar. The owners are super friendly and fun to chat with, former set designers from LA with obvious talent for design and craft. Starting in the 1950s, sculptor Frank Antone Martin fashioned concrete into over 35 Biblical figures. Despite the apparent theme, he created the park as his personal statement of peace rather than religious devotion. Statues dot the hillside wrapping above the Evangelical Free Church of Yucca Valley. There are groupings of disciples listening to the Sermon on the Mount, apostles and other biblical characters in discussion or contemplation

Salvation Mountain is located in the lower desert just east of the Salton Sea and about a hour and a half from Palm Springs. Salvation Mountain must be seen to be fully appreciated. Its 50 foot height and 150 foot breadth is made totally of local adobe clay and donated paint, and is truly unique in the United States and probably the world. From its Sea of Galilee at the bottom, to the big red heart in the middle, to the cross at the very top, the recurring theme of "Love" is everywhere at Salvation Mountain. Creator and folk artist Leonard Knight actually lived on sight for 30 years, painting and creating his masterpiece until a few years before his passing in 2014.
