Tips and 'Must do' list for Doubtless Bay

Cafes and Takeaways - and Icecreams!

The kiwi way of life is well and thriving in our area! You can find takeaways which you can take back to Golden Sand to enjoy, or quaint cafes in Mangonui or Taipa. Plus the best of the best ice creams at Cable Bay Store. Evening meal choices are: MANGONUI: The Thai, Indian Spice, or our favourite: The Waterfront Cafe for a la carte and pizzas; plus Little Kitchen for brunch is great! ; TAIPA: pies and coffees at Wild Nektar or coffee at Ramada with views over the bay is very nice.
Huge famous ice creams and massive burgers. You cannot come to Cable Bay without sampling the ice creams too. Tip: Great coffee but no disposal cups - bring your own takeaway cup or take one of Nana's

Parks & Nature

Puheke should be on your bucket list for the quintessental kiwi beach! White sandy deserted beach with turquoise waves. You can collect shellfish such as tuatua if the tide is low too. Sand dunes for the kids to scramble around. Or hike up the hill for views all around. Breathtaking.

4 Cable Bays in 1: ** The Lagoon for toddlers at high tide - shallow water and rock pools to explore ** Little Cable Bay - lovely crescent beach with regular waves, safe swimming, and shelly sand. ** Main Cable Bay - action central for swimming, walking, surfing, boogie boarding, kite surfing, endless fun! Also note the plaque for the telegraph cable which came ashore from Canada in the 1908. You might be lucky enough to find the remnants in the sand today ** The Creek where kids enjoy damming the stream of falling down the steep sides of the stream ** The Private Beach At the far end of the beach is the lovely pohutukawa fringed small bay. Lovely for a spot of serious sun bathing!

Getting Around

Hire a 4WD vehicle which you can drive to Cape Reinga and 90 Mile Beach. They will deliver the car to you or you can pick up at their depots. Also have a large range of vans and cars. You can collect the vehicle at an airport ( Auckland, Kerikeri, Whangarei and Kaitaia) One way hire available. Daily hire for 4x4. Combined rentals not a problem ( few days hire a 4WD, a few days hire a car)

Walks to Explore the Area

We would recommend the following walks: ** Historic Walk of Mangonui , an old whaling town. Best to get a brochure from the Information centre in Mangonui and walk around the streets of Mangonui. Reimagine the bustling whaling town that was the main town with a courthouse and hospital back in the day. Find the whalers burial site. ** Mangonui Pa - you can really see the trenches and old pa with panoramic views of the entire Doubtless Bay. ** Walk the length of any of the beaches - Taipa, Cable Bay, and Coopers Beach - look out for petrified coconuts here - Relaxing stroll and swings for the kids at the Mangonui end of the beach.
Taumarumaru Reserve - great for walking the dog - site of a couple of Maori Pa, lovely bush and wonderful views. Don't miss the pink shelly beach North of Coopers Beach ** Mangonui Pa - you can really see the trenches and old pa with panoramic views of the entire Doubtless Bay.

The Saturday Market in Kaitaia is a must

Situated on Matthews Ave, this is a haven for fresh local produce, awesome bread and baking, maori remedies, locally grown coffee, and so much more. Also swing by Te Ahu - on the same street a little further South - for a symbolic building we are very proud of. Houses the MASSIVE de Surville anchor, enclosing cloak at the hongi doors, then the godwits and Te Ika a Maui. Be sure to go upstairs to view the floor and pous (tribal poles) from above. Kids don't miss the library, with its kauri forest at the rear, and sand dunes ceiling. Fun.
