Where Father Rhine and Mother Moselle meet. ("German Corner") The establishment of the Teutonic Order at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle in 1216 gave this historic site its name, the “Deutsches Eck” (“German Corner”). Koblenz also owes its name to the meeting point of the Rhine and the Moselle - from “Castellum apud Confluentes”, Latin for “fort at the confluence”, which over time became the current name of Koblenz. The Kaiser Wilhelm memorial: Shortly after Kaiser Wilhelm I’s death, the idea arose of creating a memorial to him, as it was the Kaiser who had brought about the unification of Germany after three years of war. Originally built in the baroque style, the square was modernised by Elector Clemens Wenzeslaus von Sachsen, who also built Koblenz Castle. The square was named “Am Plan” because it was the first square on the Koblenz map (‘plan’) that was (evenly) paved. The southern side of the square was largely destroyed in the Second World War, so no historic buildings have been preserved there.

In the 15th century, Koblenz even became the Prince Bishop’s main mint and so took over from Trier. The mint was originally made of up several buildings (Schmelze, Strecke, Pochwerk, Schlosserei, Weißstückküche, Glühöfen, Probierhaus - melter, roller, stamping mill, metalworking shop, blanching, annealing furnaces and quality control), which were torn down at the beginning of the 19th century and made way for the Münzplatz of today
