Parks & Nature

Fraser’s Hill is a highland resort destination nestled among the mountains of Pahang, located about 40 minutes away from Kuala Kubu Baru. This cooling holiday retreat is popular for its nature activities and cooling climate, attracting not just locals escaping the city heat, but visitors from Singapore and other international locations. It is also one of the last hill stations of Malaysia, an imprint left behind by former British colonial masters. Fraser’s Hill has its roots in the 1890s, when the tin ore trade was bustling. After a failed gold mining venture in Australia, Scottish prospector Louis James Fraser arrived to explore the remote Titiwangsa mountains of Pahang.

The Chiling Falls are probably the most beautiful waterfalls of Selangor. They can be reached after an adventurous trek along the river, which has to be crossed many times. To reach the trail head, you take the road from Kuala Kubu Baru to the Gap. After passing the Selangor Dam, you cross the bridge on the Chiling river. Just after this bridge you can park you car. Follow the road for about 100 meter, the trail head is clearly indicated. Soon you will arrive an open field beside the river, with some buildings and a campsite, maintained by the Fisheries department.

Sungai Chilling is a waterfall and fish sanctuary at the foothills of Fraser's Hill, located after the Selangor Dam from Kuala Kubu Bharu close to Sungai Pertak. On weekends, this picturesque nature destination attracts many visitors from Kuala Lumpur and those en route to Bukit Fraser. Managed by the state fisheries department, the river was gazetted as a nature park and fish sanctuary to preserve a local species of mahseer (green 'Kelah'). Access is by a small entrance with an arch along the trunk road to Fraser's Hill, immediately after the steel bridge. There is a small clearing for parking vehicles, but do not display any items of value on the seat or dashboard.

Bukit Kutu is a mountain near Kuala Kubu Bharu along the trunk road to Fraser's Hill. At 1,050m high, it was once a colonial hill station called 'Treacher's Hill', until usurped by neighbouring Fraser's Hill in popularity. Bombed by the Japanese during the war, it was eventually abandoned to wild, until even the access road (by cart rail) was lost in thick vegetation. Today, the only remains of the bungalows that once overlooked the lush valley are a chimney, fireplace and well (that still collects water), and stone walls at the other end of the ridge. It is a popular climbing spot on weekends, with beautiful views of the Titiwangsa mountain range and Kuala Kubu Bharu dam at the summit.

The signage is quite good otherwise it would have been difficult to find, tucked away as it is behind quiet residential streets. It is a simple spring with one concrete lined pool with a sub-divided section where the spring emerges. The water is hot but bearable. The district council has constructed two gazebos for shade and a small building for toilets (but with no toilets inside as yet).

Pine Tree Hill is a 1,500 meter high mountain that sits in Bukit Fraser. The trail head can be accessed near the end of the High Pines road, just before the bungalow after Seri Intan. The trail is about 5.5 km long, and it remains the most challenging and toughest trekking path in Fraser's Hill. The name is inspired by the coniferous plants that used to dot the peak. Of special note were five endemic conifer species of dacrydiums, which have all but disappeared from the peak today. The trail winds up and down across several tops and ridges before hitting the peak. The view from the peak is a panoramic vista of the surrounding landscape of forests and mountains on clear days.

Food Scene

Apparently, this stall is famous for their ‘asam pedas udang galah’. Look at these freshwater prawns. They are gigantic! There are other dishes on the menu and they are sold à la carte. They include ikan pari (stingray), ikan kembong (mackerel), ikan siakap (seabass) and daging tetel (minced meat), all prepared asam pedas-style. Dataran Kuala Kubu Bharu is easy to spot. If you come by this area, you MUST stop by for lunch.

Yik Mun is undoubtedly the most popular eatery in town – famous for their homemade steamed buns, coffee and Chinese-Muslim fare. Yik Mun serves their own brand of Hainan White Coffee (hot @ RM3.70, iced @ RM4.30) and it’s unexpectedly better than some other well-known brands in the market. The flavor is bold and smooth with a low acidic taste. I guess the Hainanese touch really makes a difference.

This family run eatery was established in 1920 and has been in existence for over 80 years. Most travellers will drop by here and have their meals as they drive up to Fraser's Hill or on the way down. The Hailam noodles is one of the specialty here. Try also the Hainanese coffee with milk which is not too sweet. Others in the menu include toasted kaya and butter bread as well as half-boiled eggs.

Getting Around

The Kuala Kubu Bharu railway station is a Malaysian train station stationed at the northern side of and named after the town of Kuala Kubu Bharu, Selangor. The station provides both Komuter and Intercity services. The station was opened on January 5, 2008, and is the fourth stop in the Rawang-Tanjung Malim shuttle service (formerly known as the Rawang-Kuala Kubu Bharu shuttle service). The station replaced the Kuala Kubu Road railway station approximately 2.5 km northwest. The station, as are all the other stations along the shuttle route (except the Tanjung Malim Komuter station), is situated along two railways with two platforms like most station halts along KTM Komuter lines, but contains facilities normally reserved for medium-to-large stations along three or more lines. In addition to ticketing facilities and basic amenities, the station contains spaces for administrative occupants, as well as a "kiosk" and an additional foot bridge (fused with a foot bridge exclusively for Komuter users) for pedestrians that simply intend to cross the railway lines. The station also includes low-tech support for disabled passengers. The station exits northeast into a branch road that leads east into the town centre of Kuala Kubu Bharu. The Kuala Kubu Bharu station's two side platforms are designated as Platform 1 (adjoining the main station building at the east, intended for southbound trains) and Platform 2 (at the west, intended for northbound trains).
