首里城は沖縄県内で最大の木造建築物で、那覇市首里の見晴らしのいい高台にある。中国と日本の建築様式のなかから、沖縄の風土に合ったものをミックスした独自の琉球建築だ。正確な創建年代は分かっていないが、13世紀末から14世紀には存在したと考えられている。第二次世界大戦の沖縄戦では辺り一面が焼け野原となった。1992年に首里城が復元された後、2000年12月には「琉球王国のグスク及び関連遺産群」として世界遺産に登録され、沖縄を代表する人気観光スポットのひとつになっている。

Everything was destroyed in 1945 during WWII bombing. Shurei Gate, reconstructed in 1958, has red-colored tiles on the two-layered roofs, which are set in white lime, retaining a beauty unique to Okinawa.
