Food Scene

If you Google "best DC restaurants" you'll get three places that are all easy walking distance from our house -- The Red Hen, Anxio and The Royal. But the Red Hen is the best -- great food, great staff who will talk you through a delcious menu and a wonderful, warm atmosphere. And it's only a seven-minute stroll down First Street from our house. Just make sure you phone ahead to check availability, it's a popular place.

This a is great place that is close to the house -- Basque-style tapas, with the most extensive cider menu you'll have ever seen. Try the cider "whiskeys" they are really good -- staff are great at making recommendations too

Great place to grab a coffee or a drink and a light meal -- Latin America style breakfasts with lots of avocado and poached eggs. Nice bar area and a very chill atmosphere, and located just where Bloomingdale meets the hot spots of Shaw

Really, really good local pizza. Very family oriented, with a dining area upstairs with lots of local history on the walls, and a nice outside area on a quiet side street. Also a great back up if you've shown up at Red Hen and found it is full! They do take aways but no deliveries -- however, it's a short and pleasant stroll from our house

This a really good bakery that is located in what used to be a cinema back in the 1940s and 50s. The sign is still up outside to guide you in -- great cakes, croissants and savory pastries and there's a little seating area outside too. The coffee is pretty good too.

This is a little further away but worth the cab ride, which is only about seven minutes anyway -- the place has a hip, modernist vive and the food is delicious French-American fusion. Highly recommended

This is a hopping place with a good menu of burgers, salads and bite-sized dishes. Right on the U Street corridor which is where most of DC's night-life happens these days. Good place to hit before going out on the town, but also does brunches if you recovering from the night before

Haven't tried this one myself yet but everyone is raving about it. It's very close to the house and right opposite the Landmark Atlantic Plumbing, one of the best art-house cinemas in DC, which has a nice bar in the lobby ( you can take drinks into the theater)

This a is a really cool, hip cafe with outside seating among the cherry blossoms and bougainvillea. Does great coffee and pastries, but can get busy at times, especially Sunday mornings when the Farmers Market is going on right outside

Union Market is a culinary treat! Huge old warehouse space that converted into cutting edge restaurants, food stalls, bars, ice cream stands and deli stores. My personal favorite is the raclette grilled cheese sandwich at Bidwells sit-down restaurant, followed by ice cream from Little Baby's across the market hall

Drinks & Nightlife

This place is awesome and especially cozy on a cold night -- designed to look like the old hotel bars of the 40s where DC's spies or intellectuals would meet, it has a snug feel and serves fantastic old-style cocktails to boot. Does decent bar food too

The 9:30 is a classic on the US music scene -- small and intimate, with a crazy range of artists playing, from the hyper-local to big names like Bob Dylan and Springsteen who have played here in the past. They also often have two sets a night, and the earlier shows are only about $25 to get in.

Entertainment & Activities

This is a really nice cinema, which shows a cool selection of the films of the day as well as more limited release artsy movies. Very quick walk from the house

Parks & Nature

This is Bloomingdale's hidden gem, known only to the locals -- a beautiful little park created by residents on the site of what used to be a small factory back in the old days. It's where the locals go to have a picnic, drink a beer on a summer evening or walk their dogs. My five-year-old daughter calls it "the secret park" because apart from a sign on V street pointing the way, you wound't know there a public space tucked between the blocks of Victorian row houses . And for those wondering, Crispus Attucks was an African American man who was shot dead in the Boston Massacre in 1770
