ジャガラモガラは、雨呼山（あまよばりやま）の北西の標高５７０mのところにある大きなくぼ地の南端にある、標高５５０mの等高線で囲まれた東西３０m、南北６２mのすり鉢状のくぼ地を言う。
くぼ地の底は、複雑に変化しており、地下は、すべて流紋（りゅうもん）岩の礫石（れきせき）が埋積されている。また、くぼ地の底でありながら、水がたまることがない。さらに、くぼ地内には多くの風穴（ふうけつ）があり、真夏でも０度前後の冷風が噴き出て、その冷風がくぼ地全体を包み込んでいるため、極めて特異な植生が生じている。
具体的には、一般的に高山において見られる植生とは逆に、くぼ地から高度が上がるにつれて、草木、低木、高木へと植生が変化している。また、植物の春の芽生えが遅く、ベニバナイチヤクソウ、コキンバイなどの亜高山性の植物が群生している。さらに、レンゲツツジ、ヤナギラン、ハンゴンソウ、ナンブアザミ、ホソバノキリンソウ、キセワタ、チョウセンゴミシ、トモエソウ、ミツモトソウ、ノダケ、ツリガネニンジンなどの非常に珍しい植物が数多く見られることから、学術的にも貴重な場所となっている。
