Bronte is another stop along the Bondi to Coogee walk – although for many, it's the final one. Easy to see why. Swimmers congregate towards the mellow and very photogenic Bronte Baths to the beach’s south. The surrounding parklands are just as popular, with plenty of natural shade to picnic beneath. On public holidays, large groups clamour for the public barbeques, but they’re reliably free throughout the week. Bronte’s also got the goods when it comes to surfing. The waves are considered some of the east’s best, and are surfed by groms and veterans alike. The rocky southern headland and vigorous swells create ideal surf conditions, but they come with a caveat: the waves usually break over a treacherous reef. A little known fact about Bronte: the local surf lifesaving club, founded in 1903, claims to be the first of its kind in the world.

Ridiculously beautiful Bronte Baths offering one of the best saltwater lap pools in the city. But there’s more to this corner of Sydney than just a day at the beach. While its bigger, more beautiful neighbour often gets all the Insta-fame, these beautiful ocean baths are very deserving of a dip too. Built into the rocky cliffside, stairs lead down to a shallow-ish pool area, which is great for families and little nippers. There’s a small wooden barrier, which divides the pool up, so lap swimmers can do their thing (it’s not very long though, making it more suited to a leisurely few laps rather than a serious swim). Also try and get here before 7am – watching the sun breach over the ocean’s horizon from this vantage point is pretty special.

Bronte Park ticks the boxes when it comes to barbie spots: plenty of hotplates; a beach; and lots of green space for that essential game of cricket. Easily accessed via public transport, it's Sydney's best spot for a cook-up, so pack the family, the esky and everyone you know. (Insider tip: the park gets busy, especially on perfect summer days, so make sure you get in early for pan space)

Food scene

You’ve probably broken Iggy Ivanovic’s bread at one of Sydney’s top restaurants. This is bread you need to work at: the thick, chewy crust of the sourdough is a workout for the jaw, giving way to a slight earthy, sour flavour and incredible texture. Iggy’s bread deserves the best butter you can find, and that’s about all you’ll want to put on it.

Eating out isn't getting much more wholesome and nutrient dense than the spread available at Bronte's Broth Bar and Larder. Not only can you stock up on activated nuts, cacao power bars and raw sokolata, kim chi, pâté, stock and tallow from Star Anise Organic Wholefoods, but now you can sit down to a hot cup of broth in four flavours (chicken, beef, fish or vegetable) that you can opt to add flavour bombs to (coconut milk, ginger, cumin etc).

A great little pit stop on the Coogee-to-Bondi coastal walk, Café Salina has views of Bronte Beach and park – bags a spot on the sidewalk and settle in. For breakfast, they're serving hearty takes on the usual suspects – ricotta hotcakes, all the Benedicts – and for lunch they have burgers, steak and plenty of seafood. They're big on juices and smoothies, too.

So named after one of the local shoreline's most distinctive rockpools, this long-standing stalwart of the Bronte café scene has been the go-to when locals are in need of a fry up or some crumpets and jam, with a side of postcard-worthy views, since 1993. Humble and wholesome, this unpretentious brekkie spot delivers all the goods of its bougier counterparts without worrying about the frills.

Hot tip for new players: on Sunday Bronte Beach is a madhouse. On those days during summer a sea of fluoro-pink nippers and their parents floods this petite beach for junior surf lifesaver training. Instead, you want to head down here for a sunrise swim, or after the lunch rush. That way it’ll be a breeze when you rock up to the jaunty blue-painted kiosk for a smoothie, coffee or slushie. They also do fish and chips and burgers, like all good canteens should, and you can surf a sugar wave after you’ve battled the breakers with cookies, killer pythons and ice creams.

After getting your gills wet, you can pop over to the architecturally designed pavilion for a smoked salmon bagel, grilled chicken burger, haloumi salad or a croque madame under the big outdoor umbrellas set up at the base of the cliffs. If it’s one of those blistering days when only liquid sustenance will do they also make smoothies, milkshakes, juices and iced coffee.

When the weather’s warm, many will find themselves heading towards the beaches in the eastern suburbs. To avoid the beach crowds, be sure to stop at Ruby’s Diner, conveniently located in Waverley at the corner of Taylor Street and Bronte Road. This narrow space, which opens out onto the street, is brightened by the nautical, tattoo-like mural comprising a flock of vibrant birds sprawled across the back wall. But don’t let this loud interior detract from the focus here – coffee. While most of us will appreciate the Single Origin coffee on tap, serious coffee drinkers will be thrilled by the speciality filter methods on offer including Aeropress, siphon and the cold drip black, served on ice with a wedge of lime and vanilla syrup. The all day breakfast features generous dishes of French toast with honey ricotta and a local favourite, creamy scrambled eggs with asparagus and smokey tomato relish. Lunch offers Asian-inspired dishes such as lemongrass chicken salad with chilli jam, Chinese cabbage and brown rice and a decadent pecan pie to finish. Owned and managed by Ed Devlin, the youthful staff are relaxed but attentive and happily point out their favourites on the menu.

From the ancient Asians to the free-thinking free-ranged Greek philosophers, the hearty and marauding Roman Empire, the animal-loving, triangularly-obsessed Egyptian Pharaohs, the multi-wife-engaging pommie monarchs, the fathers of that little place called the USA and the kings of the surf at the best chicken shop on the best road by the best beach in Bondi, the humble chicken has travelled far; traversing the continents, sailing the seas and bringing magic to many a welcome plate.

Among Equals Bilum bags are handwoven by artisan weavers in Papua New Guinea, and we are committed to honouring and promoting this ancient tradition on a global platform. Every Among Equals Bilum is unique, a one-of-a-kind work of art particular to the weaver and her home in Papua New Guinea - along the Sepik River, The Highlands or Telefomin regions. Traditionally, these bags were used to carry hefty loads such as oranges and potatoes, and even serve as hammocks for sleeping babies. Today, we celebrate their art - each bilum bag captures the weavers craft and her story. Our wonderful ambassador Florence Kamel and the Among Equals community of weavers via a short film produced by Maximilian Homaei, created during our second visit to Papua New Guinea in 2017.
