Gateshead, An iconic cultural destination As you arrive in Gateshead, you’ll be welcomed by the magnificent 54 metre open wingspan of the iconic Angel of the North. Steeped in modern culture, Gateshead is opposite the city of Newcastle upon Tyne and borders County Durham. It is the North East's very own vibrant and dynamic arts and culture hub standing proudly on the south bank of the River Tyne. There, alongside the Gateshead Millennium Bridge, you’ll find the Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, one of the UK’s finest art centres. A former flour mill, it is free to enter and well worth a visit. Further along the Quayside is Sage Gateshead, a music centre rooted deeply in the North, with an international profile. It is home to the Royal Northern Sinfonia, often said that there is "no better chamber orchestra in Britain". With a packed and varied programme of events there’s something for audiences of all ages and tastes. But Gateshead is also so much more. It’s the perfect place to enjoy the great outdoors. Wind down with a peaceful stroll in some of the area’s most picturesque countryside locations – such as Gibside’s sprawling Georgian gardens or the award-winning Saltwell Park.
