“La Merced” still catches the eye and sparks the imaginations of visitors to the north shore of Fidalgo Island...the four-masted schooner has taken on new life as a breakwater in a case of creative recycling. Since it was moved into position in 1966, the boat has been overtaken by trees that grow in the sand that fills its hull. The ship is now a part of maritime history and was placed on the National Historic Register in 1990.

Nasty Jack’s Antiques was established in 1972 by “Nasty” Jack Wilkins and his partner “Diamond” Jim Reynolds. Described by many as two colorful characters, they pursued their dream to operate an antique store. Through their entrepreneurial savvy, Nasty Jack’s grew into one of the biggest and most successful antique establishments on the coast of Western Washington. Eventually, “Diamond” Jim left the business to pursue other interests, and “Nasty” Jack continued to run the business for over twenty years, establishing himself as an icon in the antique world. Throughout the years, “Nasty” Jack was the subject of many television interviews and newspaper articles. At 12,000 square feet, Nasty Jack’s remains one of the largest antique stores in the region.
