Dessert

Roselle Desserts is a miniscule from-scratch fusion French patisserie that turns out some of Toronto’s favourite cookies, soft serve and all-around baked treats. Roselle is actually named for a crepe spreader, as crepes were meant to be their specialty.

Bobbette & Belle on Yonge is the brand-new uptown offshoot of a Leslieville patisserie equally beloved for their ornate wedding cakes as they are for their deliciously down-to-earth baked goods. After three years on Queen East, co-owners Allyson Bobbitt and Sarah Bell felt the time was right for expansion - and the former card and stationery shop, located a few blocks north of Lawrence, represented the perfect opportunity.

Bakerbots is just eight weeks old and only open on weekends and evenings, but it has already earned a reputation for some of the best ice cream sandwiches around. I head to Bakerbots on a day of unprecedented heat, practically clawing at the locked glass door waiting for the clock to strike six. Relief. The door is opened, and I head inside, thinking only of ice cream--and if I'm lucky--air conditioning.

mon K Patisserie offers baked treats in a style not often found in Toronto. The bakery was inspired by French cuisine, but the goods have a Japanese flair added on by the husband and wife duo who create them. Ryosuke and Naomi Kita are making it a priority to bring Asian-style desserts to the city, and two months in, they say it's working.

Brownies

Bunner's Bake Shop has opened a new location in Kensington Market that I'm guessing is going to be more popular than the original in the Junction . There's something about Bunner's that seems particularly suited to the neighbourhood. Maybe the veganism or the fact that everything is gluten-free; maybe it's their style (a little Pitchfork twee- hello chalkboard paint and some kind of colourful shredded paper streamer garland).

Geste basically means gesture in French, but at this viennoiserie refers to a concept of Alain Passard's which roughly translates to an idea of "the beautiful hand." "Over time, the hand becomes more and more beautiful, superfluous gestures are eliminated," Passard once said. "Like painters, you have to become real creative: erase the hand, erase the gesture."
