Local Walks

Godshill Cricket Ground is 3.2 miles from us and roughly an 8 minute drive. This is one of the best local New Forest walks as it's got acres of forest access so you can walk for miles or just enjoy a quick 5-10 minute stroll across the hilltops. When you arrive at the carpark, walk straight across the field going past the cricket square. From here you can either walk downhill and into a long walk or turn right and walk along the hilltops for a quicker route with some of the best panoramic views in the New Forest. It's mainly grass or stone paths so this walk can be done in all weather and seasons. There's usually plenty of wildlife about and the views are stunning!

Frogham Car Park is 2.1 miles from us and roughly an 8 minute drive. We find the sat nav/maps doesn't bring the carpark up so the best way to get there direction wise is to put in a nearby pub (The Foresters Arms). When you reach this pub, make sure that it's on your left hand side and you continue going down the road. After you pass several houses you'll come across the carpark on your right. There are two carparks, a top and bottom one. We usually park in the bottom one as there's potholes on route to the top carpark. Whether you park at the top or bottom, be sure to go to the top carpark as from there is in our opinion, the best view point in the whole of the New Forest! The views are absolutely stunning and there's acres of open ground and forests so you can walk for miles or just have a quick look around. There's a constant brook running through the bottom of the hill and there's always plenty of wildlife about. This is probably our favourite walk and a must see area!

Rockford Common is roughly 4.1 miles from us and about an 8 minute car journey. Unfortunately it doesn't come up on sat navs/maps so we recommend searching for 'Linwood and Ellingham Trail' in maps. Once here you carry straight on across a small bridge and you'll see the carpark and sands of Rockford Common in front of you. Once you walk up the hill the space opens up into miles of open ground and plenty of beautiful panoramic spots which benches dotted about as well. Lots of wildlife and stunning views. A really good walk!

This walk is about 6 miles from us and roughly 12 minutes by car. It's more or less the same area as the Rockford Common walk but just from a different side and with more options and directions to travel. The sat nav/maps won't come up with the address but if you search for the Red Shoot Inn, you'll see the Appleslade Car Park on your right before you arrive at the Inn. This area is perfect for short or long walks and either through forest or wide open grounds. It's teaming with wildlife and panoramic views so definitely worth a visit!

This walk is around 6.5 miles from us and a 13 minute drive. If you put in 'Telegraph Hill Trail' in maps it will take you near to where to carpark is. Once you're on the long Roger Penny Road you'll see the carpark on your right near where the hill trail is. This is a great walk before it's flat ground for nearly all of it (at least the part where we like walking). From the carpark you can go straight down and into the woods. We prefer going right before the woods and it's all flat ground and opens up into beautiful expansive views all around. If you walk down far enough (roughly 30-40 minutes each way) you'll come across a world war 2 bombing range observation shelter. An interesting part of history and from there you can carry on walking into other parts of the forest or start heading back. A really beautiful walk full of wildlife, nature and breathtaking views so highly recommended!

This country walk literarily begins when you step outside the front door! If you walk across the bridge and head all the way down, you'll come to a small path/crossing on your left. You can then follow this path all the way down into Fordingbridge or take the first left to take another scenic route around fields and farmland. This walk can sometimes be overgrown in places and they'll also be lots of puddles if it's raining or has been raining recently. Suitable walking clothes and wellies are a must in the autumn and winter seasons. Plenty of wildlife and stunning scenic spots. Well worth a trip considering it's so close by.

The Gardens were listed as Grade II on the National Register of Historic Parks and Gardens in 1997. We had an amazing day out here, the gardens, plants, trees and flower displays are spectacular and the environment is relaxing and beautiful, highly recommended!

Beaches

Roughly 16 miles and a 30 minute drive from us, Highcliffe Beach is the most easterly beach in Dorset, sitting right on the border with Hampshire. A series of breakwaters help to create a sand and shingle beach that is popular with swimmers and surfers, particularly body boarders. Not in keeping with its name, Highcliffe is backed by grassy dunes, bushes, trees and low-rise cliffs. The dunes and shrublands behind the beach are criss-crossed with a number of paths and at the western end there is the Steamer Point Nature Reserve. From July to September there is a lifeguard service on the beach and the beach is cleaned daily during the high season and at regular intervals during the winter. Car-parking for just over 600 cars is available at the top of Highcliffe cliff, a pay car park, including disabled parking as well as a café (The Cliffhanger Café) and toilet and baby changing facilities. From here there is a rather steep path descending down onto the beach that makes disabled access difficult. However, there is a surfaced wheelchair route from Waterford Road to Chewton Glen. Pubs, restaurants, and shops can be found a few hundred meters away in the centre of the town of Highcliffe. The Dorset coastal path runs alongside the coast from nearby Chewton Bunny along to Mudeford Quay, providing a few miles of undisturbed paths for walkers to enjoy. This is by far our favourite local beach. The views from the beach and cliffs are stunning and we always have an amazing day here, highly recommended!

Roughly 17 miles and a 35 minute drive from us, Hengistbury Head is a relatively unspoilt and south-facing pebble and sand beach, with imposing clay and ironstone cliffs. At the less developed end is Hengistbury Head Nature Reserve, which separates Poole Bay and Christchurch Bay. There is plenty of parking as well as toilets and a cafe. It's about a 30-60 minute walk (depending on your fitness) from the carpark to the beach through beautiful scenery or they have a cute "land train" which takes you back and forth for a small fee (not sure if this is still running or not).

Roughly 16 miles and a 30 minute drive from us, Southbourne Beach is one of Bournemouth's favourite Blue Flag award winning beaches, particularly loved by the locals for its wide, exceptionally clean, sandy and shingle beaches situated further to the West of Bournemouth, away from the hustle and bustle of Bournemouth Pier and the town centre. The beach is popular with young families due to convenient facilities such as toilets with baby changing facilities, lost children centres, RNLI lifeguard stations, pubs and ice cream.

Access Southbourne beach directly from Southbourne high street through Fisherman's walk. The beach is popular with young families due to convenient facilities such as toilets with baby changing facilities, lost children centres, RNLI lifeguard stations, pubs and ice cream.

Idyllically positioned in the heart of the New Forest, once a Royal Hunting Lodge dating back to the 17th Century. This delightful pub is roughly 1.5 miles and a 5 minute drive from us. You can find wild animals such as donkeys, cattle, pigs, and donkeys grazing outside. The Royal Oak is a cosy, characterful thatched pub serving local cask ales, fine wines, freshly prepared food using locally sourced and seasonal ingredients, the menu features traditional pub comforts and modern British dishes. We've had a Sunday roast and drinks here before and every time it's been fantastic. Highly recommended!

Known locally as the donkey pub, The Foresters Arms in Frogham has always been a New Forest favourite. It's roughly 2 miles from us and a 7 minute drive from us. Well worth visiting before or after a Frogham walk as the pub is very close to the carpark. They have a lovely sunny garden to enjoy in the summer months and winter time it's a place where you can hunker down beside the wood burner and tuck into a heart warming dish. Highly recommended!
