Inexpensive Mexican food, but sort of obligatory to get a photo of the sign which always changes and I would dare say is...world famous. See our books in our house.

Sightseeing

"Barton Springs Pool is a recreational outdoor swimming pool that is filled entirely with water from nearby natural springs. It is located on the grounds of Zilker Park in Austin, Texas. The pool exists within the channel of Barton Creek and utilizes water from Main Barton Spring, the fourth largest spring in Texas." As an old Austinite I overheard said, "If you don't go to Barton Springs regularly, you might as well live in Dallas." I try going here all the time during the summer. Just good for dipping and people watching.

Sort of the obligatory thing to do during the summer to watch the bats. If you can rent a kayak from the Rowing Dock, it would offer a different way to view the bats than standing on shore on on the bridge.

Nice hike. If you are able to go NOT during the weekend, it will be relatively quiet. If the water is flowing, really magical and nice...an oasis in hot Texas. If the water is not flowing, it is a dry riverbed! Good hike either way.

Overall, some solid hiking really close to the city. To get there, I would walk to Barton Springs and then you can continue on the Greenbelt south for many miles.

This is where we rent our kayaks and SUPs. Good access to Red Bud Isle, or head east and explore the river by the city.

I run on this all the time and you can make various length runs by crossing over at the various bridges. Water stations along the way. It is roughly a 10 mile loop that can be cut up. If you don't run...then you can rent a bike and ride it as well there!

Just north of Barton and where Barton outflows is Barkin Springs. It is free, whereas Barton you have to pay for, and dog friendly. During the weekends turns into a madhouse by 10 or 11, but if you go during the week it will be empty. During the summer, I will end my runs here, swim and then do the final 1.5 miles back to our hosue.

Another place like Sculpture Falls is hit or miss. Hit if the water is flowing and it is the weekday or early on weekend and not crowded, miss if it is completely dry or on a weekend and silly crowded which makes the experience not fun.

Bars

Many of the bars and restaurants, for lack of better term, have become generic things (though nice) that you could find in any other city. This is one of the vestiges of old Austin and full of locals.

Neat place that has been around forever. Off the beaten path from the normal downtown places. "Scholz Garten (also known as Scholz Beer Garden) is a beer garden and restaurant in downtown Austin, Texas and the oldest operating business in Texas. Established by German immigrant August Scholz in 1866 after the American Civil War, Scholz Garten became a hub for German immigrants and their culture in the capital city. It was purchased by The Saengerrunde Club in 1914, who still owns it today. It remains a popular gathering spot for both political discussion and University of Texas sports events."

Fancy steakhouse; while most of Austin is pretty casual, I would get into business casual minimum here. We have gone here a couple times for Happy Hour for good food deals. Walking distance from the place.

We have walked by here a million times, and it always seems to be crowded with women drinking mimosas. I don't know how else to explain it. Walk by, you will see what I mean. We wouldnt mind trying someday.
