Food scene

If you enjoy good deli sandwiches and pickles, this is the place for you! Grab a quick sandwich for lunch or dinner at extremely reasonable prices! I’ve never had a bad sandwich in this place, and you won’t believe how much stuff they have in the store! Fishing supplies, sunglasses, women’s and mens clothing, beach supplies.. you name it! This place is a hidden gem here in the OBX. I love recommending this place to tourists because food prices on the island can be very pricey.

Sightseeing

Get started early for a fun day on Ocracoke Island. It’s about an hour drive down to the free ferry, just south of Hatteras. The ferry ride is nice and you can move around once the ferry is under way. Most days you will see several birds, maybe some dolphins playing, or even a whale! You will be on the ferry for a little over an hour before you arrive in Ocracoke. The island is only 4 miles long, and the roads are narrow. We found renting a golf cart and putting around the island on it is by far the best choice. The restaurant’s are very good, or there is a small general store with a surprisingly good selection! If you want to look for seashells, Ocracoke offers some of the best shelling around! If you enjoy history and pirate tales, Ocracoke is the spot where infamous Blackbeard the pirate was killed, you can walk out to Teaches Point ( Blackbeard’s real name was Edward Teach), and see the spot for yourself! It’s definitely a fun day trip to enjoy, but I definitely recommend getting to the ferry early because the line gets long quickly during the summer season!! I also recommend taking at least a few hundred dollars cash with you, because storms at sea can pop up out of nowhere and the ferry will stop running which means you’re staying in Ocracoke until the ferry is able to go. It is not uncommon during a storm for Ocracoke to lose power, so your bank card will NOT work anywhere for anything! Chances are nothing like that will happen, but better safe then sorry. It might mean the difference between being able to get a room for the night, or sleeping in your car!

Wild horse sightseeing tours are very popular here in Corolla. The Outer Banks, barrier islands off the coast of North Carolina, are home to some unlikely animals. Horses descended from Spanish mustangs have been living wild here for hundreds of years. To survive on these islands, the horses dig for freshwater and swim from island to island in search of fresh grazing areas. ( Information taken from National Geographic website). It is ILLEGAL to go within 50 feet of the horses, or to feed them anything! Every year horses die due to people not following the rules and feeding them or attempting to approach them, the males particularly are very wild and can get into a fight over the females and cause serious injury to anyone too close. Please respect the wildlife and follow the rules! Around here, we call the horses “Bankers”, if you’re interested in more detail and history regarding the herd, google has lots of information! Our bedroom also has a booklet with more information for booking tours etc.
