City/town information

Key Peninsula is rich in history. Imagine the time before the Tacoma narrows bridge existed or even hood canal. It was all about waterways to transport people, food and facilitate commerce. The area had the *Mosquito Fleet*, several small steamboats criss-crossing the region. The Lakebay marina (now closed) used to be a chicken farm. Imagine that, pulling up by boat to get eggs. We have our own power company, a co-op that has existed for over 100 years. Several original homestead farms still exist around the peninsula. Look for unique barns!

Bug repellent

Seasonally, we get mosquitos for a bit just before dusk, but they don't tend to linger long. We have bug spray in the bathroom medicine cabinet next to the first aid. But bring your own if you have a brand or ingredient preference. Speaking of bugs, while we try to eliminate bugs...we do get seasonal sugar ants in spring and now like everyone on the west side of the state, stink bugs in the fall. Both are harmless, but please be aware that we cannot control the forest especially if doors or left open.

We do have distant neighbors

Key Peninsula is primarily rural zoned for agriculture. Generally our neighbors are quiet with no contact, but they like to enjoy their land too. On occasion you may hear people activities. Please be considerate and keep abnormal loudness down (like outdoor music) past 10pm. Across the street is acres and acres of vacant land, so generally it is a very quiet and secluded area with occasional cars passing.

Watch the bats at dusk

One of our favorite things to do is watch the bats emerge each evening. You can see them anywhere on the property, but it is particularly fun to sit on the covered deck (only lights on in the tiny house) and they will dart in and out, flying above your head.

We have wild animals

Please don't ever forget that we are remote in an area with a healthy population of wildlife. We have seen deer at all times of day and night come through. Which of course is really cool! Interesting birds, like osprey, eagles, herons and hawks are common to see in the sky. It is very cool when the night owls are active. They can get really loud. I have found bear poo on the property and I hear of the occasional mountain lion on the Peninsula. I just wanted to pass on this information to give you some awareness of our surroundings.

Fishing! Fresh lakes are popular nearby.

Bay Lake, Jackson Lake, Wye Lake and Carney Lake are the most popular.
