This the closest major grocery store before our place. It has a wide selection of grocery items including a deli, fish and meat counter, and bakery items. Come here if you need to do a lot of shopping for your stay. It’s in White Salmon, which is on the way to our place from Portland after crossing the Hood River bridge.

minute grocery shopping. Not a huge selection, but what they do have is great, including locally farmed fruit and veggies.

Walk beside the nationally-designated Wild and Scenic Klickitat River along the old railroad bed that once went from the Columbia River town of Lyle to Goldendale. Enjoy the golden hills, the swift-flowing river that is a favorite of kayakers and spring wildflowers that begin bursting forth as early as February.

This entire gorge is famous for its wind and water sports, and Doug's Beach is a coveted spot. The winds can be fierce, whipping the river into a white-capped frenzy. Kite boarding and windsurfing success at this site comes with bragging rights and respect; it is rated as expert and is only recommended for those who are properly trained, skilled and equipped.
Love the water, but not much of a kite boarder? A small rock beach area offers swimming and paddle sports on non-windy days, and the river often yields small-mouth bass to intrepid anglers.

My favorite local mountain spot! Diverse terrain for boarders/skiers as well as a large Nordic center. If you didn’t bring your gear, Meadows has a solid rental shop.
If you don’t feel comfortable driving in the snow or don’t want to hassle with parking, you can take the ‘Gorge-to-Mountain Express’ bus from Hood River for $5 round trip.

14040 OR-35My favorite local mountain spot! Diverse terrain for boarders/skiers as well as a large Nordic center. If you didn’t bring your gear, Meadows has a solid rental shop.
If you don’t feel comfortable driving in the snow or don’t want to hassle with parking, you can take the ‘Gorge-to-Mountain Express’ bus from Hood River for $5 round trip.

Unwind
An old school has been converted to a hotel and spa. They’ve done a great job and is definitely worth a visit. Get a day pass to their soaking tub/cold plunge/sauna in a very comfortable, unpretentious setting.
