Down the hill from the Ferry station, Dry Dock is a neighborhood restaurant and bar with solid Cajun and Creole cuisine, like poboys, barbequed shrimp, red beans and rice, gumbo, fried seafood platters and a good selection of bar food and burgers. There are a few tables outside and there is always a lively scene.

This family friendly Italian restaurant is close to the ferry. They make delicious, Neopolitan-style thin crust gourmet pizzas, along with salads, antipasti plates and a unique appetizer of meat-stuffed, deep fried green olives called "ping." They also have a front and back bar with patio seating. At the front bar, they sell an always changing frozen cocktail called the "ferry companion" so you might want to pop-in for something to keep you cool during your ferry ride.

Appetite Repair Shop is not a sit down restaurant but rather a carry out gourmet shop run by one fabulous chef. The hours are Thursday-Sunday from 5:00 to 9:00 PM or until all daily specials sell out. It's best to check out the menu on FB before you head over (https://www.facebook.com/The-Appetite-Repair-Shop-1421508064788756/). This is a one man operation. The chef pours a lot of love into his food but if he needs to close he will. If you have had a long day of site seeing and want to have dinner back at the guest suite this is a delicious option.

Old time, dive bar with outdoor seating on the levee. Live music 3-4 nights a week. Friday night there are usually many light-up bikers who travel the levee trail in a group, so colorfully lit bikes and bikers along with food trucks crowd the streets. Many movies have been filmed here.

Getting Around

Ferry stops running from the east bank at 10:45 PM Friday and Saturdays and at 8:45 PM Sunday through Thursday. During Mardi Gras and other festivals the ferry will run on an extended schedule. NORTA (New Orleans Regional Transit Authority) has a mobile app called Le Pass (search in your app store for NORTA Le Pass app) where you can buy an integrated day pass for $3.00 - $7.00 dollars which gives you unlimited ferry, bus and streetcar rides for 24 hours. Sometimes NORTA also sells a special "JAZZY Pass" for only $3 a day that is also for 24 hours which you can buy and use via the Le Pass app. One person can also purchase multiple passes for a group and use one phone for everyone. This is great because the ferry also demands exact change of $2.00 per rider. They don't give change. That being said it's the cheapest and best boat ride. The Canal Street terminal is under construction so look for the signs to the dock. On the Algiers side, don't go through the terminal but walk down the dock ramp alongside the building.

New Orleans Rapid Transit Authority (NORTA) is the name of our public transit system. You can download an app with that name for all routes and schedules and you can buy tickets and passes through the app for buses, streetcars and the ferry. Or pay cash $1.25 for bus/strretcar, $2.00 for the ferry. The Algiers Point 101 bus runs once an hour and ends at Canal Street downtown (close to Superdome, Smoothie King Center, Saenger and Orpheum theaters. The stop is only two blocks from here at Opelousas and Verrett in the corner of Delcazel Park.

Founded in 2000 by self-taught artist Charles Gillam, the Algiers Point destination features work that pays tribute to Louisiana’s rich musical heritage and stands as one of the South’s few “living” folk art environments. Mixed-media statuary, poured concrete sculptural forms, and a small museum housing music memorabilia and works by noted self-taught artists are all located on the property. Gillam’s own “Blues Greats” series featuring the sculpted faces of Al Hirt, Pete Fountain, Memphis Minnie, and Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, among others. Sightseeing

Anyone who comes to Algiers Point must take time to walk or bike the Mississippi River Trail on top of the levee. Great views and sunsets over downtown and the french quarter. I can even tell you where to find an awesome set of rope swings. The map shows the trail starting further away than here but that's not the case, walk to the end of the road toward the skyline, rather than walking straight ahead through the muck, make a left on Brooklyn and turn into the drive by the warehouse immediately on your right, straight ahead you'll see a path leading to the levee trail.

If you want to take a plantation tour, the only plantation I recommend is the Whitney Plantation. Because it really tells the story of plantation life. It is a Museum that tells the truth about Louisiana's enslaved people. The amount of research that has been done is remarkable and the exhibits are extraordinary and heart wrenchingly beautiful.
