This National Trust property is only a few miles from the annexe and is well worth a visit. The Castle was built in the 13th century under the instruction of Edward I and is well maintained. It is set in beautiful gardens and the grounds beyond provide the opportunity for many different walks. As you would expect from National Trust there is a cafe in the castle grounds and the shop has a good range of gifts. If you fancy something a bit more adventurous then you can opt for a guided Segway tour! For more information visit: https://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/chirk-castle

Pontcysyllte - pronounced 'Pont-ker-sulth-tay' - located within an 11 mile stretch of canal, this world heritage site has to be seen to be believed. The aqueduct, designed by Thomas Telford sits 39 metres above the river Dee and is the second aqueduct on this stretch of the Llangollen canal (Chirk Aqueduct being the first). It has 18 arches and took 10 years to build. You can cross it by foot or in a narrow boat - just don't look down if you are scared of heights!! It's only a short drive from the annexe. This is quite a quirky place but has a really good atmosphere and plenty to see and do. Home of the famous Knife Angel which toured the UK to educate people on the dangers of knife crime. The large sculpture park provides you with plenty of space to wander round and view the many exhibits. There is are two large indoor showrooms which showcase a variety of items made from a range of materials - some more eccentric than others! The onsite cafe offers a good range of drinks and snacks. Entry at the time of publishing this was free, but always best to check before you visit. More information can be found at: https://www.britishironworkcentre.co.uk/things-to-do-whilst-here/

Powis Castle was built in the 13th century by Gruffudd ap Gwenwynwyn (don't ask me how you say it!) and sits on a rock above its world famous garden in Welshpool. It has a colourful history and changed hands many times, now owned by the National Trust it is worth a visit. The gardens are spectacular with the 30ft high cloud like yew trees spilling over onto the terraced borders. Pistyll Rhaeadar is a really dramatic waterfall in the Berwyn mountains about 16 miles west of Oswestry. It falls in 3 stages over a 73 metre (240 foot) drop with the tallest stage being about 40 metres. It is considered to be one of the seven wonders of Wales and is also a site of special scientific interest. There are car parking spaces at the foot of the waterfall but theses are limited so you might have to park a bit further away. There is also a small cafe. Walking

There are loads of walks in this area – we have provided some books that give details • 50 walks in Shropshire • Shropshire tea shop walks • Ron’s rambles • Oswald’s trail • Strolls around Selattyn • Oswestry Ramblers favourite walks (around Oswestry and the borders) • Cycle rides in Shropshire (1 and 2) – for those of you who want to go cycling You are welcome to borrow these books but please look after them and make sure you return them at the end of your stay. If there is a particular walk that you want to follow we would be happy to photocopy the relevant pages for you – just let us know. If you just want a bit of exercise then there are a couple of walks you can do in under an hour from the annexe. Village loop – turn right out of the barn entrance and walk up the lane until you come to a cross roads, turn right up the hill, past a large white house on your left. Keep going until you come to a T junction, you can either go straight on into Pant Glas or turn right again to take you past a farm and up the hill to another T junction. Turn right here to take you down the hill and back into the village. You’ll need to turn right again as you enter the village to take you past the primary school and then right again just at the edge of the village near the new houses. It’s easy – just keep turning right! If you decide to go into Pant Glas, then follow the lane down into the pretty hamlet and then turn left to take you back towards Selattyn. Go straight on at the cross roads up the lane and then back down again until you come to the barn on your left. Both of these walks can be done in under an hour. Down the Nant – if you want to take a slightly shorter walk then you can go ‘down the nant’. This will take you back through the village. Turn left out of the barn and then left again at the new houses to go into the village, past the primary school. Take the first turning on the right down quite a steep hill. As it turns a corner go straight on down a smaller, quite uneven lane. This will take you past a large property called ‘Nant Issa’. Keep going past the nursery until you come to a left hand turn that will take you up through the woods. Follow this track (it can be muddy in wet weather) climbing up until you come to the road. Turn left and follow the road through the village, past the church and the pub. The primary school will be on your right so you will need to take the right hand turn near the new houses to arrive back at the barn.

Shrewsbury is the county town of Shropshire, sitting inside a loop of the River Severn, and its Tudor centre is lined with half-timbered houses. It has a wealth of shops and cafes and the walking tour of the city is a good way to familiarise yourself with what is on offer. The medieval, red-brick Shrewsbury Castle houses the Shropshire Regimental Museum, where military artefacts include uniforms and weaponry. The Park and ride is a good option and very reasonably priced but if you want to park in the city centre then Frankwell car park is very central and not too expensive.
