Charro Cafe. Founded in 1922, it claims to be the oldest Mexican restaurant in the United States that’s been continually operated by the same family. In that time, generations of chefs have passed down and perfected some seriously delicious recipes. The most important of these menu items can be seen drying in a dangling cage outside the restaurant every day.

This classic hotel, built in 1919, looks like something straight out of the classiest parts of the Jazz Age. Built on the newly paved Congress Street where it still stands, the swanky hotel even looked classy back in the day. Of course all of this splendor in the otherwise developing town managed to attract some high-profile clientele, including some of ill repute. Namely, John Dillinger and his gang.

Legler initially worked as a postal clerk, but soon found his life consumed by his desire to spread his message to all that would listen. He purchased the land for the Moon in 1917, and with the help of a couple of close friends, began the laborious endeavor of transforming the desert into a magical landscape of winding paths, stone towers and walls, and hidden grottoes. Throughout the following years, he expanded constantly on the construction while giving tours with the aid of friends and local children under the pseudonym of “The Mountain Gnome”.

A member of the United States National Park System, the park is actually split across two separate locations to the east and west of Tucson. Parts of the Rincon Mountains, the Tucson Mountains, and the Sonoran Desert are all located within the park. The name ‘saguaro’ was actually given to the park after the name of an indigenous cactus that grows there and visitors can witness these cacti up close on one of the many treks available around the park. Hiking trails, long and short, are marked and available to all differing levels of fitness and endurance, although the park authorities advise that visitors do not attempt long hikes in the more remote parts of the park in the summer months when temperatures rise considerably.
