Our favorite beach in all of Hawaii and located right in our neighborhood. This is a "must see" place to visit during your stay. Yes, the sand is green peridot and looks like glittering green gold in the sun. The drive or hike into the beach is an adventure in itself and arriving there feels like you are visiting another planet. This beach is said to be one of the most healing places in the world and we agree! Go early and avoid the crowds!

Papakōlea Green Sand Beach

Beautiful hikes, lava tube, steam vents and if you come at the right time see a glowing, spattering lava lake! The restaurant here is pricey, but delicious and if the lake is glowing have dinner here while watching hot lava!

Beautiful black sand beach sandwiched between ocean tide pools and a lily pond! Great place for having a picnic and watching sea turtles bask in the sun!

Pu'uhonua o Hōnaunau National Historical Park preserves the site where, up until the early 19th century, Hawaiians who broke a kapu or one of the ancient laws against the gods could avoid certain death by fleeing to this place of refuge or "pu'uhonua". The offender was absolved by a priest and freed to leave. Defeated warriors and non-combatants could also find refuge here during times of battle. The grounds just outside the Great Wall that encloses the pu'uhonua were home to several generations of powerful chiefs.
Plan to stay a while and visit the best snorkeling spot on the island just beside the park "Two-Steps"

The BEST coffee shop on the island (in our opinion) and the best part is you can walk out of the driveway, go right and you are steps away from this beautiful flower farm and delicious coffee shop. They also serve delicious baked goods and premade sandwiches/bagels. There is even a boutique inside with beautiful local artisan gifts. Open 8-5 daily

Famous Punalu'u Bakery - not healthy, but definitely delicious! We love the lilikoi malasadas and bismarks! They often have live musicians outside under the gazebo. Gift shop inside with local goods.

Delicious Thai food, but sometimes strange hours so be sure to call ahead and make sure they are open. There is often a a wait, however they do takeout and that is what we recommend (expect an hour for takeout)
