In Washford lies one of the undiscovered jewels of Somerset, providing an interesting day out for families and budding historians alike. The Cistercian abbey of Cleeve is a haven of peace and tranquillity, said to contain the finest cloister buildings in England. Visitors today can catch a glimpse of monastic life 800 years ago; although the abbey church was destroyed by Henry VIII during the dissolution in 1536, the cloister buildings including the gatehouse, 15th century refectory with its glorious angel roof and 13th century heraldic tiles have survived remarkably intact. The great dormitory is one of the best examples in the country, and an exhibition and virtual tour tells the story of the abbey and daily life for the holy men that once inhabited it. The abbey is located in a beautiful valley surrounded by countryside so is ideal for walkers or visitors travelling on the West Somerset Railway

This fascinating valley is a U-shaped dry valley that is parallel to the sea. It lies about ½ mile to the west of Lynton. It is well known for its feral goats that roam freely and often quite hair-raisingly on the jagged cliff edges. It is thought that during the Ice Age the ice sheet prevented the East Lyn River from reaching the sea on its normal route and was diverted westwards. When the ice sheet retreated the river was able to resume its original path, leaving this valley riverless. Over the years the valley has silted up to become the U-shape we now see, not caused by a glacier. It is well-known for its unusual rock formations and caves.

The Guilds and Incorporation have existed in Exeter for nearly 600 years and have occupied Tuckers Hall since 1471. Both the Incorporation and the Hall have a remarkable story with a glorious and continuous history. The wealth of Exeter in the mid 17th and early 18th centuries was created as a direct result of the woollen cloth trade in the city, controlled by the members of the Incorporation. On the back of this prosperity, many became Merchant Venturers and later Bankers. With mechanisation and loss of overseas trade, Exeter's affluence waned along with the Incorporation's membership, declining significantly almost to the point of extinction. However, by adapting to the changing climate the Incorporation survived and since the Second World War has prospered with membership once again increasing and playing its part in the Civic life of Exeter. The Incorporation is recognised as one of the few surviving established provincial Guilds with strong links to associated City of London Guilds.

Our pools at Exe Valley Leisure Centre and Lords Meadow Leisure Centre are both supplied by a private borehole water source 40m below ground. This water supply is filtered and treated prior to entering the circulating system, and the pool water is disinfected with a combination of Ultra Violet, and low levels of chlorine. The pools range in temperature from 28 – 31 degrees and are tested for quality 5 times each day. The operational teams are qualified to undertake routine maintenance on the disinfection and circulation systems on a daily and weekly basis, and our water quality is also tested externally under laboratory conditions each month. All of our pools are covered overnight to reduce heat loss and have a removable hoist to assist users with disabilities access in and out of the water. If you or your children have been ill within the past 48 hours please resist the temptation of visiting the pools to prevent the spread of contamination. In extreme circumstances, it may be necessary to close our pools, particularly if there is a risk of cryptosporidium. Our poolside recreation assistants have all achieved the National Pool Lifeguard Qualification, and undertake 2 hours of training each month in areas such as emergency planning, first aid and C.P.R, and undertake many operational duties when away from the poolside areas.
