This is our personal favorite hiking trail in Austin! Tucked into the upscale River Place neighborhood, you'll forget you're in a city. The hike is easy through the first mile off the Big View Drive entrance. After that, you will be hiking up stairs for quite a while, but the breathtaking view at the end is well worth it! BEWARE: The trail is $10 during peak usage hours on Saturdays and Sundays, but free otherwise

Barton Creek Greenbelt is by far the most popular trail in Austin, and deservedly so. If you don't mind fighting for a parking spot, you won't be disappointed with this easy hike. Bring your swimsuit, because there are great watering holes along the way!

BBQ Recommendations

Certainly the most famous BBQ in Texas, Franklin Barbecue is a must for first-time visitors. Though the long lines are not myth, it is the best plate of central Texas style barbecue you can have in Texas. On a weekend, I would get there at 8a to wait in line and, even then, you won't be first. Also, I would bring cards or another activity to pass the time while you wait in line.

Only a 5 minute drive away, Brotherton's is convenient and one of the most underrated barbecue spots in the Austin area. There is typically not a line, but you'll have to go for lunch because they usually sell out before dinnertime. Regarding the food, the brisket is excellent, and the sides are all some of the best you'll find at a bbq joint.

Swimming

Barton Springs is the most famous pool in the Austin area. Filled by a natural spring, Barton Springs will cool you off on a hot summer day and make you feeling refreshed. Beware: the pool will be very busy no matter when you decide to go. Also, topless nudity is allowed, so you may want to pass if that makes you uncomfortable.

What quite possibly might be the best gem in the Austin area, Hamilton Pool was finally made mainstream in the last 10ish years, and backed-up reservations ensued. You will need to book a reservation months in advance, but that keeps the pool from being overcrowded.
