The Amsterdamse Bos (Amsterdam Forest) is Amsterdam’s largest park and recreational area. The lush forests and grassy meadows offer plenty of space for a relaxing picnic with family or friends, and the park is crossed by many kilometres of well-marked walking and cycling paths. Inside the forest you’ll find a goat farm with a petting zoo that makes delicious homemade ice cream and cheese on site. There is an outdoor theatre, a botanical garden and a long canal known as the ‘Bosbaan’ where rowing competitions often take place. Bicycle, canoe, kayak and pedal boat rental is available at the Amsterdamse Bos.

Huis Marseille is a small photography museum that has occupied a gorgeous, 17th-century canal house located in the centre of Amsterdam. It takes its name from a stone tablet attached to its exterior that depicts a scene from the French port of Marseille. The curators of Huis Marseille have strived to maintain as much of the house’s original warmth and intimacy as possible. Each of its exhibition rooms has a unique character and the building itself still carries an aura of a ‘gentleman's residence'.

Drawbridge, check. Towers, moat and battlements, check. So fairy tale it hurts, the pristine medieval castle of Muiderslot to the east of Amsterdam looks more like a Disney film set than a defence post. Rest assured it is the real deal; and the visitor centre at the castle has 700 years of historical evidence to prove it.

Seen across the water, the small island of Pampus looks like any other island. But take a closer look and you’ll see this is no natural land mass at all, but a submerged sea fort built in the 1890s to protect Amsterdam from enemies. After a restoration in 2007, you can now visit Fort Pampus by boat and explore its secret tunnels - and it’s also a popular location for events.

Cycling is wonderful in Holland, especially the greener routes through the countryside. Rent a bicycle near Amsterdam Central Station, hop on the free ferry over to Amsterdam Noord and follow the North Holland canal into Waterland, a vast area of farmland, small villages, nature reserves and waterways. Smaller routes to Durgerdam and back take a couple of hours. For a full day of cycling, venture along the dyke all the way to quaint Monnickendam and up to Marken, with its green wooden houses and cafes. A ferry connects Marken to another fishing village, Volendam. Perfect for sampling kibbling or herring, the local delicacies.
