Sightseeing

A great short-ish hike (depends on perspective) to amazing waterfalls that the family can enjoy. Perfect afternoon hike or when short on time. Excellent views. If visiting in the summer, be sure to take a polar plunge in the snowmelt water to cool off. Dogs are welcome but make sure you keep them away from the cliff edges and slick rock up top.

Climbing

Lander is a climbers paradise. From sport to trad, there is something for everyone. Unlike many crags across the country, you won't be competing for routes. If you are not use to elevation, expect to find yourself breathing hard the first day. Sinks Canyon is around 6-7k ft while Wild Iris is above 8k ft. Although it may sound surprising for WY, climbing is possible essentially year round (just throw a few hand warmers in your chalk bag). The sunny side of Sinks canyon dries out quick even when sage and rattlesnakes are frozen to the ground. A guidebook is available at the house, but for those of you who want to purchase ahead of time, the BEST guidebook for the area (high quality + updated + written by the guys/gals who you will be climbing next to you) is Lander Climbs (2018). The book can be purchased at Wild Iris shop downtown or online at https://www.wildirisclimbing.com/shop/lander-rock-climbs-2018. Something to note is that the TR options are few and far between in the area. There are some places where a TR can be set, but many of the bolts are suspect and some rely on pitons (no thanks). If you are not feeling synced to be on the sharp end of the rope, your best option is to ask someone to be your rope gun. TIPS: If you are going during the summer months, check out Wild Iris or the Shady Side of Syncs. The Sunny Side does have the most routes, but it also has the most rattle snakes. Due to the well used trails, the snakes are not "typically" a problem, but if you would rather not risk it, there are a ton of amazing alternatives. Grizzly - Wild Iris has had a resident griz for a few years (name is Waffles). Waffles is a great guy (or girl?), and although it is exciting to see a Waffles, its best to just leave Waffles alone. Be sure to clean up after yourself. Pack out your food scraps, don't toss food into the brush or you may be creating a less than comfortable belay situation for the next group. Don't approach Waffles. Stay calm and practice bear safety. Remember that a fed bear is a dead bear, and no one wants that for Waffles. (Side note - I have climbed at Wild Iris for years and have yet to see Waffles or any other griz. Chances of you seeing one is incredibly slim. However, its best to be on the safe side. Griz really don't want anything to do with us humans but they do like our food, so just take the appropriate steps to keep you and the them safe!).
Visit https://www.mountainproject.com/area/105827053/sinks-canyon Also, there is a climbing guidebook at the house for guest to use (just please return it before leaving!). Sinks Canyon is a premier climbing destination. Within a few miles, the rock changes from sandstone to limestone, and then to granite as you get closer to The Wind River Range. There are fantastic climbs on the sandstone and granite, but the sport climbing on the Dolomite is where Sinks really shines. If you are not a sport climber, there is access to trad climbing on the granite and sandstone, as well as bouldering on all 3 rock types. The rock quality is generally excellent. You can find everything from hand swallowing pockets in the Killer cave to perfect overhanging crimps on the Addiction Wall. There is climbing for every ability here from 5.6-5.14c. While there are gems of every grade, the most classic climbs are 5.10 and up. As far as access goes, it doesn't get much better than this. Sink's is the closest climbing area from town, it is about a 10 minute drive to the Main Wall parking lot, and about a 15 minute approach (depending on how atrophied your sport climber legs are). Make sure to bring plenty of water and extra layers, no matter what time of the year it is. You can climb at Sinks all year, but the best temps are during the cooler months. While the rest of Wyoming is a frozen wasteland, the Main Wall is often baking in the sun. It can be 0° in town and you can be climbing in a T shirt. Believe it or not, the south facing side of Sink's Canyon is one of the best winter climbing areas in the United States. Steve Bechtel's Lander Rock Climbs 2018 is a must have for visiting the area and will give you much better information and directions than Mountain Project. Watch out for 1) afternoon thunderstorms rolling off the Winds 2) numerous rattlesnakes and 3) locals who have 'Killer' wired. Getting There From Lander, head southwest of town on Wy 131. It's a straight shot and you can't miss it. It is about a 10 minute drive from town.

Local pronunciation

In Lander you will see the name Popo Agie quite a bit. It’s the name of the National Forest and local tributary. The proper pronunciation is Pa-Poe-Sha. Don’t worry if you get it wrong though.

Clothing

Even in the summer months, it’s always good to have a few extra layers. The mountains and hikes around Lander can go above 8-9k ft of elevation. Even if it’s a warm day in town, the evening can cool off when you are in the backwoods adventuring. Having an extra light jacket will be worth it. When hiking or during any sweaty activity, try to avoid cotton. Cotton can drain your body temperature when wet. Stick to synthetics as much as possible!

Bear spray

If you are going to be spending anytime in the backcountry, you should pick up a can of bear spray at one of the local shops. Although it’s not cheap, the cost will be worth it if you have an unfortunate run in with a grizzly. Although griz are not a problem in the area and chances are you won’t see one, it’s worth being prepared just in case.

IMPORTANT: share your adventure plan w/an emergency contact

The Wind River range provides an immense amount of outdoor adventures. However, every year search and rescue teams look for lost hikers or hurt climbers. Often, these teams have to piece together possible locations, an endeavor that waste valuable time during a rescue. If you are going to explore the outdoors, be sure to let someone know WHERE you are going and WHEN you will be back. Even if it’s a short day hike, be sure to text or call a friend or family member beforehand and share these details. Even if they have no clue where you are referencing, search and rescue will.
