There's a beautiful, accessible path to a stand of redwood trees (called the "Redwood Theatre"). Perfect for a picnic and to gaze at the sky as the stars come out. Check if there are any closures.

Go along the Russian River if you fancy the idea of dipping into a river beach, fishing or some tubing fun. Blackberry vines are common and you can harvest berries, but beware of oak trees which can cause rashes.

I haven't visited this meadery yet but I was hoping to the next time I go up to Windsor. I love seeing the photos of their flower fields on Instagram; it looks peaceful and full of nature. And I love honey mead!

There's lots of lavender fields around Sonoma and I've always wanted to visit when it's in bloom. This is one I know of, but you have to book an appointment to be able to tour the farm.

If you're making a trip up or down highway 101, you'll want to pull out constantly to take in the views and snap photos. The views at Goat Rock Head in particular are breathtaking. Recommend going at sunset or driving along to catch the sunset at Jenner.

City/town information

In San Francisco, the Golden Gate Bridge is the most popular tourist destination, and is acclaimed as one of the world's most beautiful bridges with its tremendous towers, sweeping main cables and great span. Do not forget to stop at historic Fisherman's Wharf where you can watch the daily catch unloaded from fishing boats as you snack from one of the many outdoor food stands. Visit the Maritime Museum or tour the USS Pampanito, one of the best-restored World War II fleet boats open to the public. Ghirardelli Square was once the home of the Ghirardelli chocolate factory. Today, it is an indulgent shopping (and tasting!) experience all by itself, with an incredible view of the bay. Alcatraz tours depart from Pier 41. The National Park Service now owns the infamous federal penitentiary and provides ranger programs and a self-guided audio tour that features stories about some of the most notorious criminals ever incarcerated on "The Rock."

A beautiful, tranquil coastal town with access to a beach. The waters where the Russian River meets the ocean are calm, a light blue and can be kayaked upon. Recommend visiting one of the coastal towns at sunset.

I enjoyed visiting a taffy shop in this coastal town and picking out fun flavors. They also apparently filmed some movie (Birds?) at a church here.

Tips traveling from Oakland

Leaving Oakland via I-80 East, you'll exit onto Hwy 29 North and enter the Napa Valley. The city of Napa is an interesting first stop on your way up the valley. Napa's streets are pedestrian friendly, so park your car near Main Street and explore this historic working-class community. The Napa Visitors Center is on Main Street, and a free walking tour map is available. If you have time, enjoy lunch or dinner on the Napa ValleyWine Train departing from the town of Napa. Or just visit some of the small bookstores and boutiques and try one of the fabulous creekside restaurants.

Tips traveling from San Francisco

Just across the Golden Gate Bridge you'll find the Muir Woods National Monument. One of the San Francisco Bay area's last uncut stand of old-growth redwood trees, the park pays homage to the great environmentalist John Muir. In Santa Rosa, the Charles Schultz Museum & Research Center is a must for all Peanuts fans and you will not be disappointed in the museum that memorializes the work of cartoonist Charles M. Schulz. You can enjoy early murals of Charlie Brown and Snoopy, a wood relief sculpture of Snoopy showing the changes in the famous dog's appearance and Schulz's actual work studio.
